The 2009 Scion xD Series 2.0 – Exclusive Style in a Compact Package
This limited-edition Scion adds another layer of pizzazz to the entry-level.

There’s a common myth that a compact car has to look and feel boring. Nothing shatters that impression like spending some time with the 2009 Scion xD Release Series 2.0. This limited-edition version of one of the most popular youth-oriented vehicles on the entry-level market puts a special spin on an already fun-to-drive hatchback.

Scions have always stood out from the rest of the compact crowd thanks to an extensive, factory-backed customization program that allows their owners to outfit them with a wide range of performance parts and appearance modifications. The 2009 Scion xD Release Series 2.0 continues this tradition as a unique model that commands a humble MSRP of $15,320.

The Release Series 2.0 shares the same drivetrain as the regular 2009 xD. The hatchback is equipped with a 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine that produces a lively 128 hp and 125 lb/ft of torque. Drivers can choose to row the gears via a five-speed manual transmission or leave the shifting duties up to an optional four-speed automatic unit.

As might be expected for a vehicle of its size, the Scion xD Release Series 2.0 is quite frugal when it comes to fuel consumption, sipping regular gas at the rate of 27 mpg around town and 33 mpg during highway cruising. The vehicle’s short and wide stance enables it to acquit itself admirably when rolling through tight corners and this confident handling is backed up by excellent comfort for a compact car, even when traveling over broken pavement.

The most substantial differences between the regular Scion xD and the Release Series 2.0 can be found in the interior and exterior trim. First and foremost is the hatchback’s Pioneer navigation system, which employs a 5.8-inch LCD touchscreen that controls not only destination information, but also all of the vehicle’s audio and video entertainment options. This includes the ability to customize the screen by selecting from a palette of 32,000 colors. iPod and Bluetooth integration is included as well. The video screen is ready for integration with a rearview camera in addition to HD and satellite radio, a boon to anyone looking to expand their in-car entertainment options.

Travelers will also appreciate the ability to create a road trip itinerary on their home PC using special software and then upload those plans to the xD’s navigation system using either an SD memory card or a USB flash hard drive. For those who would prefer to keep their hands on the wheel while driving, the unit is also capable of responding to voice commands.

The Release Series 2.0’s interior is rounded out by the presence of silver accents on the seat covers, as well as unique badging to identify it as a special model. The vehicle’s doorsills bear additional “Release Series 2.0” lettering backlit by white light while four-in-one interior lights add a touch of class throughout the cabin. On the outside, the vehicle can be easily spotted thanks to its unique Electric Wasabi green paint job and wheel covers, which are exclusive to the model. An optional rear spoiler can be fitted to the compact car.

Of course, the 2009 Scion xD Release Series 2.0 benefits from the same safety and convenience features offered across the entire xD line. All versions of the vehicle come equipped with a tire pressure monitor, antilock brakes and a full complement of airbags. Vehicle stability control can be added as an option to help keep the vehicle pointed in the right direction no matter how bad weather and road conditions might get.

In addition to standard fare such as air conditioning, power windows, door locks and mirrors and keyless entry, the xD Release Series 2.0 can be outfitted with a remote starter, a cargo cover and a number of Toyota Racing Development performance parts. These range from a sport muffler to a cold air intake to lowering springs, all of which can dramatically increase the fun factor when it comes time to play with the xD on twisty back roads. Additional spoilers, wheels and interior accents are also available. In fact, a large portion of the enjoyment of owning a Scion comes from your ability to personalize it to represent your own ideal vision of how your car should look, sound and drive.

There will be only 1,600 examples of the 2009 Scion xD Release Series 2.0 built, which makes it one of the more collectible – and desirable – vehicles in the entire Scion lineup.
