Mom? Done. Dad? Almost done. Pastry platters? Picking those up this afternoon. It’s the holiday season, and it seems like you’re constantly stopping and going, picking up gifts for the family and stopping at the grocery store for dinner. Don’t forget that last minute gift that you need for the Yankee swap. As your list gets longer, you end up spending more and before you know it, you’re muttering, “Bah humbug.”

Relax! You can take control of your finances this holiday season so you won’t be counting pennies or dreading the bills that will arrive later. Follow these tips and you’ll be whistling all the way to the bank – or the mall!

Make a Plan: It’s never too early – or late – to draw up a holiday budget. Sit down and think of everything that you will spend money on this holiday season. Set allotted amounts that you will spend on each person on the list. Remember that you don’t have to spend the same amount on everyone. It’s the thought that counts! Along with creating a list of whom you need to shop for, make a list of what you need to shop for. If you know that you want to buy your significant other a special piece of jewelry, write it down. A new set of clubs for Dad? Take note! This planning goes for any holiday dinners or parties that you’ll be hosting. Decide what you need!

Divide and Conquer: You don’t want to stand in a long line the day before your party when there’s so much more you have to do! Start your food shopping early – you don’t have to buy every single food item in one trip. During one week, you can buy packaged snacks and canned goods. As the event gets closer, you can buy the fresh ingredients like fruits and veggies. Don’t forget to check your pantry to see if you already have some of the stuff you need. Devote a weekend for shopping for the adults and another for the kids.

Shop Around: You don’t get those flyers in the Sunday paper for nothing! Compare prices between stores because you can save anything from a few dollars to hundreds! The Internet is also a great resource. Don’t be afraid to order online. Many stores offer great shipping deals (if not free) and guarantee that your gifts will arrive before Christmas. 

Visit the Dollar Store: Why spend more than you need to on wrapping paper and ribbon when it’s only going to be tossed? Stop by the local dollar or discount store where you can stock up on wrapping paper, ribbon and tissue paper. You can also find some great holiday greeting cards there as well. Be creative and make your own wrapping paper using old newspaper and brown paper bags. Don’t forget plenty of tape, too!

Two Useful Tips:

You don’t need to buy a gift for every single person that buys you something. Sure, if it’s someone that you absolutely have to get a gift for then that’s fine, but don’t feel obligated to reciprocate!

Don’t obsess over every little penny. Have some fun and if you go over your budget by a few dollars, that’s not a problem. Try to stick to your plan and you’ll have a successful shopping season.
