First TMdrive-DC Drives Started Up in Europe
by Paul Baiklock
TM GE’s first TMdrive-DC™ drives were started up this month at a metals mill in Europe. The new DC drives control two shear systems and associated equipment on the customer’s rod mill producing 8, 10, and 12 mm round rods. The TM GE system uses 12 DC drives, 1 AC drive, a master Innovation Series Controller, a Cimplicity HMI system, and toolbox software. The DC drives range from 70 kW to 700 kW (94 – 938 hp) and control two sets of rotary shears, pinch rolls, chopping shears, and cooling tables. The TMdrive-30 AC drive is on the rod block immediately preceding the shears. With the new drive system, the customer has been able to realize an increase in line speed from the original 23 m/sec to 31 m/sec. This first new DC system installation was supported by representatives from TM GE for the overall electrical system design and startup services, and TMEIC for TMdrive-DC software support.
