Chamber supports trade, travel links to Mexico

Chamber representatives attended Hemispheria, an annual international summit aimed at North American mayors, and celebrated American Airlines’ expansion of direct airline service to the city of Chihuahua.

Hemispheria, held in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León, in May, aims to increase North America’s global competitiveness by fostering cooperation among mayors and private-sector leaders, local chambers of industry and commerce, and academia.

Attendees discussed best practices for local government and business. Hemispheria also targets the integration of local transportation systems throughout the NAFTA region. Chamber representatives met with executives of Mexican companies who expressed interest in expanding into the DFW region

The Chamber also participated in American Airlines’ inaugural flight from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Chihuahua.  This flight is the third begun by American from DFW to an established business destination in Mexico in the past year.

Industries in Dallas and Chihuahua will benefit from shorter travel time.  Chihuahua’s strategic location and its rail and air transport infrastructure position it for a larger role in North American and global trade.  Chihuahua boasts an array of food distributors and also supports growing activity in industry and technology.  Tourism is also a great attraction in Chihuahua, state of the Copper Canyon.

Distinguished attendees included:

  • Director of Texas-Mexican border initiatives for the State of Texas
  • Governor of the State of Chihuahua
  • Secretary of Commercial and Tourism Development for the State of Chihuahua
  • Secretary of Industrial Development for the State of Chihuahua
  • Mayor of Chihuahua
  • President of the Mexican National Chamber of Commerce (CANACO)
  • Representatives from the Mexican National Chamber of Industry (CANACINTRA)

Chihuahua, the largest state in Mexico, is one of four Mexican states bordering Texas.  Chihuahua is its political capital. Ciudad Juarez, across the border from El Paso, is the state’s most populous city.
