The Volkswagen Jetta is all-new for the 2019 model year, with a new look, new platform, new transmission and a long list of other enhancements.
Under the hood
At first glance, the engine may seem like the least-change feature of the seventh generation Jetta. It uses the same 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder as the outgoing model, producing 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is actually down three horsepower and up a few miles per gallon from the 2018 model. Whatís more, the 1.8-liter turbo that was in the 2018 model is no longer available. Thanks to improved transmissions, the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta outdoes its predecessor when it comes to delivering driving enjoyment. The automatic is significantly more refined and now has eight gears instead of six. The manual makes a return with six gears instead of five and is incredibly responsive, satisfying and easy to use. The Jetta would be a good car for a driver who wants to learn to drive stick.
Exterior and interior design
The all-new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta rides on a new architectural platform that is slightly bigger than the old car. Itís over an inch longer and about the same width, and yet itís noticeably lighter, which is bound to improve handling and efficiency. Despite its inexpensive price tag, the Jetta makes a convincing luxury imitation thanks to LED headlights and striking character lines. The interior is also more refined, with the old cloth and leatherette upholstery of better quality than before and a new full-leather option to boot. Everything is a little more polished, a little more padded and a little nicer to the touch, and the beautiful dashboard is pure Audi.
Features and technology
The most changes and improvements come by way of technology. The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is packed with features designed to enhance convenience, entertainment and safety. Some were available before as options but are now standard equipment. Others are brand new, like the 10-color customizable interior ambient lighting and the BeatsAudioô sound system, the first to be integrated in a Volkswagen sold in the US. The 10-inch digital cockpit is completely customizable as well and supports up to four driver profile, and the list of active safety technologies is too long to spell out. Suffice it to say that the Jetta has eyes everywhere, and itís unlikely that a car or pedestrian will sneak up behind or next to you without your knowledge.
The all-new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is a success. It offers an attractive new exterior and interior design, heaps of equipment and excellent performance, and if that werenít enough, the base model is even cheaper than the outgoing one.
