There are few ways better to spend a summer night than around the warm, crackling flames of a campfire. With the stars above and the smoke rising to meet them, the experience is positively magical—especially if you’re biting into a warm, gooey snack.
Although s’mores are a classic a campfire dessert, they’re admittedly overused and overrated. Most families don’t know that there are many other desserts that can be prepared over an outdoor fire that are even more delicious. Below are some of the best alternative campfire desserts.
A favorite for many campers, banana boats deserve to be a lot more commonplace than they currently are. Using only a few ingredients, these gooey snacks taste of warm, sugary goodness.
Many different methods of making banana boats exist, and the recipe from The Art of Manliness is a solid entry. Take a bunch of ripe, yellow bananas and slice each one length-wise along its flattest side without penetrating through the peel on the other side. Stuff the banana with miniature marshmallows, chocolate chips and any other tiny treats you like. Wrap each stuffed banana in aluminum foil and cook them on hot coals for at least five minutes, until the contents become warm and melty. Finally, unwrap and eat with a spoon.
Another fruit that makes an excellent campfire dessert is the apple. Tart and juicy, apples taste splendid warmed over a fire.
Following Family Spice’s directions, core four large apples, such as Gala or Granny Smith. Place each on its own 10-inch square of aluminum foil, then wipe the inside of each with lemon juice.
Fill each apple with a mixture of cranberries, raisins, walnuts, cinnamon, nutmeg, butter, chocolate chips or any other items you like. Put another pat of butter atop each apple, then wrap them in the foil and cook them next to hot coals for 30-60 minutes. Once they are tender, dig in!
This simple campfire dessert is practically already prepared for you; all you have to do is bake it.
According to Whimsy Love, you can use a tube of pre-mixed cinnamon roll dough—preferably spiral-cut. Have each camper take one of the rolls of dough and twist it around the end of a stick or skewer, being careful not to layer the dough. Pinch the ends and bake it over coals (not the direct fire) until evenly gold. Squirt some frosting on it while it’s still warm and chow down.
Fruit cobblers and crisps
If you own a Dutch oven or are willing to buy one, you can make a wide range of fruit cobblers on the campfire. The easiest method is to layer mixed or pre-rolled biscuit dough over the contents of canned pie filling, like cherry or blueberry. Warm the filled pan for at least 30 minutes, testing with a toothpick.
