Several dozen windjammers and excursion boats participate in the annual Camden Windjammer Festival over Labor Day Weekend. It’s a great chance for windjammer guests to combine a relaxing vacation with a maritime celebration that’s fun for all ages.

Friday, September 4 at noon is the official start of the Camden Windjammer Festival. That’s when the first of the windjammers start to parade into the harbor. There are also plenty of afternoon activities taking place on shore ranging from sail-making, woodstove cooking and planking demonstrations to bollard line tossing and a concert by Bay Winds North Wind Ensemble.

Nighttime in Camden is magical when all of the windjammers are rafted up for the evening.

No dinner plans? The Maine Windjammer Association is sponsoring a Dockside Dinner Auction to give Friday Festival-goers the chance to win dinner-for-two aboard one of the historic windjammers in the Maine fleet. From noon to 4:30 pm during the Parade of Sail, silent bidding will take place at the Camden Windjammer Festival Info booth. Winners will be notified by 4:30 pm so they can arrive by 5:00 to enjoy a delicious meal, meet the captain and crew, tour the windjammer and soak up the evening’s ambience from the deck of an authentic windjammer. Value: priceless! All proceeds to benefit the Camden Windjammer Festival. A Schooner Talent Show and massive fireworks display cap the evening!

The Festival includes lots of fun competitions like a lobster crate race and build-a-boat contest.

Saturday and Sunday feature more demonstrations, along with all kinds of challenges from a chowder cook-off to crate-racing and build-a-boat contests. There will even be a relay race involving carrying small slippery fish. Suzie Boggus will perform Saturday night; a dance featuring the music of DJ Terry Frank will take place in Harbor Park on Sunday night.
