When the fall slowly starts fading into the early winter months, temperatures drop and outdoor activities with the family become less appealing. The one family event that’s fun no matter what time of year it is (but especially when it’s chilly) is going to the movies. And it just so happens that a slew of entertaining family-friendly flicks are set to hit theaters right before we hit the New Year. So grab some popcorn and take a seat, you and your family are in for a treat.
Merry Friggin’ Christmas (Rated: NA)
This comedy is about a man named Boyd Mitchler (Joel McHale) and his wife Luann (Lauren Graham) who are spending the holidays with Boyd’s out-of-whack family, including his father, Mitch, played by the late Robin Williams. Luck should have it that Boyd soon realizes he’s left all of his son’s gifts at home, so he’s forced to take his father and brother there and back — an eight-hour round trip — before Christmas morning arrives. A heartwarming and humorous comedy, the movie also features Candice Bergen, Tim Heidecker, Oliver Platt, Clarke Duke and Wendy McLendon-Covey. This movie is scheduled to be released on Nov. 7. The rating is not yet available.
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (PG)
This film is sure to please any fans of its forerunner, “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian,” which came out in 2009, and the first in the series, “Night at the Museum,” released in 2006. With a comedic cast including Ben Stiller, the late Robin Williams, Rebel Wilson and Owen Wilson, you and your family will be slapping your knees with laughter. This film follows both these old as well as new friends on a quest around the world to save the magic of The Tablet of Ahkmenrah that keeps the museum characters alive after the tablet powers begin to fade. This is the third and final film in the series, so be sure to head to the theaters on Dec. 19.
Who’s not a fan of the story of the infamous red-haired, curly-headed orphan? Gather the kids, old and young, for the viewing of a new take on this classic. Featuring Academy Award® nominee Quvenzhané Wallis as Annie and Cameron Diaz as Miss Hannigan, the cast is full of talent and flair. Bask in nostalgia as you watch the cute little foster girl stroll the streets of New York — in the modern day and age — in hopes of escaping her “hard knock life” and finding her birth parents. “Annie” hits the big screen on Dec. 19.
Into the Woods (NA)
Christmas is the perfect time to see this fantasy film, featuring award-winning actors and actresses such as Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick and more. If you love any of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, there’s no doubt this film will delight. From Cinderella to Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel, it’s a hodgepodge of fairy tales spun with a modern-day twist — a flight-of-the-imagination film your whole family will enjoy. The film hits on Dec. 25 and has not been rated yet.
