Community Auto Group was one of the many corporate sponsors for the Bay Area Relay for Life in Baytown this past weekend. This event is the largest Relay (in terms of dollars raised) in the Gulf Coast Region and the 10th largest in the United States.
This year’s Relay raised over $700,000 for the American Cancer Society and cancer research.
The 2012 Relay for Life began at 6:00pm Friday evening at Royal Purple Raceway with the Opening Ceremony and the Survivor’s Lap. Cancer survivors of less than one year all the way to over 50 years participated. They were joined by their caregivers, a critical component to anyone’s battle with cancer.
There were 175 individual campsites for teams at the site with food, raffles, and other fundraising efforts at almost every turn. All monies collected that night go towards the overall Relay goal. Entertainment from local bands, dance teams, and even an appearance by Elvis himself continued throughout the night.
Finally, at 8:00am Saturday morning, the announcement of $701,044 dollars was made to an enthusiastic group of Relayers still present. The total amount will not be final for several weeks as pledges and commitments from some are still to come.
