The weather is warming up and it’s time to come out of hibernation. In Iowa, social clubs and groups are already planning big events and activities for the summer and into next year, so join in on all the fun.

If you love biking, check out the Des Moines Cycle Club (DMCC) where all riders are welcome, regardless of age or skill level. The group hosts several events throughout the year from the family-friendly "Ridin' Green to the Farmer's Market" ride to outings with the club’s state-ranked race team. Rides are classified as “Social,” “Moderate,” “Mixed,” “Training” and “Show and Go,” so you know what kind of pace to expect. The group also organizes gatherings like wine and cheese galas, and rides to support local causes. Penny’s Pieathlon, which raises money to fight cancer, will be held on May 19, 2012; learn more about the DMCC at www.dmcycleclub.com.

The Eastern Iowa Wine Club (EIWC) offers some great ways to learn all about wines from around the state while meeting new people. Even if you don’t make your own wine, like some of the other members, you’ll still enjoy the winery road trips, competitions and tastings. Check out EIWC at www.iowawineclub.org or www.facebook.com/groups/93374710426.

Wine lovers will also appreciate the Case Club,atSugar Clay Winery & Vineyards in Thurman. Membership includes an array of benefits including invitations to annual parties and dinner gatherings, free or reduced admission to special Sugar Clay events and major discounts on purchases. Visit this award-winning winery online at www.sugarclaywinery.com.

In an effort to share good books with readers of all ages, the Akron Public Library hosts the Akron Book Club. The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month in the library’s meeting room. Members volunteer to lead discussions, and the library helps provide selected books for everyone. Kelli’s Book Club also meets at the Akron Public Library; members take turns facilitating and bringing refreshments. Visit www.akron.lib.ia.us/use-the-library/bookclub2 for more info.

If you’re more intrigued by comic books, consider joining the Iowa Comic Book Club (ICBC), which meets at the Urbandale Public Library. You’ll have a blast discussing the latest editions and attending pizza parties, movie outings and more. Check out the ICBC at www.iowacomicbookclub.com.

Whether you’re new to the social scene or interested in adding more hobbies to your to-do list, Iowa has a number of clubs and organizations that welcome members with open arms.
