Explore the mysteries of the sky with the Las Vegas Astronomical Society (LVAS). Established in 1980, the society is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the enjoyment of astronomy. At the monthly meetings, you can learn about current astronomical events and get information regarding observational tools and techniques, astrophotography and other related topics. While the group opens many events to the public, becoming a member has many benefits including special programs for beginning astronomers, discounted subscriptions to Sky and Telescope magazine and Astronomy magazine, access to the LVAS Astronomical Library, discounts from certain astronomical suppliers and more. If you have a passion for the soulful sounds of the blues, then consider joining the Las Vegas Blues Society (LVBS). The LVBS is dedicated to preserving the history of the blues and promoting blues music in the community. It offers members a place to discuss and explore all things blues – from performers and writers to historians and everything in between. Whether you cycle for fitness or a little friendly competition, you can hit the pavement with plenty of like-minded people thanks to Green Valley Cyclists. The club meets every Saturday and Sunday and welcomes riders of all abilities in the Henderson and Las Vegas areas. Check out the club’s calendar for upcoming events. The town of Dayton, east of Carson City, is considered the state’s first permanent settlement, originally populated by prospectors and settlers attracted by the gold rush. The Historical Society of Dayton Valley is dedicated to preserving Dayton’s history, heritage and culture and to promoting the Dayton Museum for the enjoyment of current and future generations. The Society operates from within the Dayton Museum, which is housed in an 1865 schoolhouse. Visitors and members can enjoy browsing the museum’s collection of photographs, artifacts, documents and more depicting much of the area’s history from the discovery and mining of gold to the construction of the railroad, ranching and much more.
