There is a big difference between buying a used vehicle with an extended warranty and buying a certified pre-owned vehicle. Certified pre-owned vehicles features warranties that extend beyond the initial coverage of the original new car warranty and are recognized by the original vehicle manufacturer. Before a vehicle can receive the distinction, the manufacturer conducts what is known as a Certified Inspection, to determine if the vehicle is worth the additional warranty coverage. If the vehicle passes inspection the manufactures authorizes the certified classification and the additional warranty will take effect after the original coverage expires. Often, certified buyers enjoy many of the same benefits new auto buyers receive.
Used cars sold with third-party warranties are sometimes advertised as “certified” but they are not truly factory-certified because the authority and expertise of the vehicle’s manufacturer is not standing behind the “warranty”. Most extended service contracts do not require manufacturer’s inspection and the repair procedures are performed routinely under an authorized certified program. In fact, the term “warranty” may be misleading, as third-party warranties are really just extended service contracts that the buyer must purchase at an additional cost. Extended service contract can usually be purchased for any vehicle, and the vehicle’s manufacturer is not involved in any coverage promised by the aftermarket service contract.
While buying a certified pre-owned vehicle is similar to buying any used car, there are significant differences you should be aware of. First of all, you should know that not all certified used car programs are the same. The manufacturer's certified vehicle program is more reliable, and can be used at any dealership service center.
How can you tell the difference? Only a branded dealership can sell its own manufacturer-certified vehicles. All certified vehicles are inspected by a manufacturer-trained mechanic and come with extended warranties that are backed by the manufacturer.
