For doers, for makers, for builders, for adventurers; the fifth generation Toyota 4Runner is the ultimate facilitator, and now, more than ever, it’s for you.
The 2012 4Runner is the company’s most ambitious and capable off-road adventurer to date. In SR5, Limited and Trail trims, Toyota’s latest features a long, slender stance, muscular fenders and a gruff, imposing face. The newest 4Runner starts with no-nonsense capability in the form of standard halogen headlamps and foglamps, and adds everything from skid plates and 20-inch, six-spoke wheels to an optional power moonroof and chrome accents and roof rails.
Across the model range, the 2012 4Runner draws its power from a 4.0-liter DOHC V6 engine, which uses Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence to churn out 270 hp, 278 lb/ft of torque and up to 23 highway mpg through a standard five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. Standard on the Trail, four-wheel drive is available on the SR5 and Limited trims; the SR5 and Trail models have a part-time 4WD system with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) while the Limited comes standard with full-time 4WD with A-TRAC and a locking Torsen®
limited-slip center differential.
For off-roaders, reinforced body-on-frame construction delivers exceptional strength and durability, and the 4Runner provides up to 9.6 inches of very necessary ground clearance. Both Downhill Assist Control and Hill-Start Assist are standard features, and the SUV’s standard tow hitch hauls up to 5,000 pounds. All 4Runners get their smooth responsiveness from a coilspring independent double-wishbone front and four-link lateral rod rear suspension setup, along with a pair of stabilizer bars. Trail models offer the optional Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System while Limited versions come standard with sport-tuned enhancements for a little slicker on-road experience. Power-assisted ventilated disc brakes come standard across the line with Multi-Terrain anti-lock brakes standard on the Trail.
Inside, the 4Runner matches its rugged exterior with an attractive and considerate cabin. Impressively spacious, the SUV seats up to seven with exceptional head- and legroom and reclining rear seats. Leather trimming is available, as is water-resistant fabric. The nicely-appointed center stack sports an available voice-activated, touchscreen navigation system, along with a rear camera, Bluetooth® and iPod connectivity, SIRIUS Satellite Radio and real-time Entune™ (with Bing™) web access for everything from movie tickets and weather to gas prices and streaming Pandora™ Internet Radio.
The true beauty of the 4Runner’s interior is its striking versatility. Rear seats split 40/20/40, fold flat and configure in any number of ways, opening a rear storage area that boasts nearly 90 cubic feet of cargo space. An innovative, optional rear cargo deck slides in and out of this cavernous void, supporting up to 440 pounds of gear when fully extended. A 120-volt AC outlet is within easy reach, and the tailgate features a sliding glass panel, lighting and speakers. The 4Runner benefits from the advanced Toyota Star Safety System™, which integrates stability and traction control, advanced braking systems and eight standard airbags.
With a starting MSRP of just $31,090, the 2012 Toyota 4Runner packs a whole lot of performance and capability into its powerful, ready-for-anything frame. Consequently, with a spacious, flexible interior ripe for configuration, there’s a lot you can pack into the 2012 Toyota 4Runner.
If you’re ready to take on the next great adventure, the fifth-generation Toyota 4Runner is ready for you.
