LAcarGUY and Toyota of Hollywood Launch School Garden
Building an organic garden at LAUSD’s Helen Bernstein High School in Hollywood
by VW Santa Monica

Community and environment are priorities at LAcarGUY.  We know change starts locally in our community and there is nothing more valuable than teaching the young minds of students…LAcarGUY and Toyota of Hollywood have sponsored with Environmental Media Association (EMA), a non-profit, to build an organic garden at LAUSD’s Helen Bernstein High School in Hollywood.  EMA launched an ongoing partnership with LAUSD to support gardens and greenery in urban schools across Los Angeles.

We at LAcarGUY believe, the school garden is great for children’s development.  Students' don't just have to learn within the confines of four walls, but that education can take place in a dynamic atmosphere.  School gardens provide student-centered experience that enriches their learning experience in a "living classroom."  Math, science, nutrition, health and fitness can all be taught through the use of these gardens.  Learning becomes an adventure!

Learning nutritious food choices is always a challenge.  Especially in environments where a bag of Cheetos is made easiest to buy.  The first step in developing healthier eating patterns is to increase students' desire to taste vegetables in the first place. Having a school garden provides children with the opportunity to learn how to lead a healthier life.  Learning how to grow fresh food helps make healthier food choices, and then our children are more physically active. Children who plant and harvest their own fruits and vegetables are more likely to eat them.

What is even more fun and inspiring to the students is EMA will directly support a celebrity mentoring via EMA’s Young Hollywood Board.  Amy Smart, Nicole Richie and Maroon 5---just to name a few!

Together, LAcarGUY, EMA and Helen Bernstein will support and maintain the school garden.
