 Symantec is taking action on a number of fronts to reduce its carbon footprint and help customers do the same. For example, we:
  • Minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at Symantec by
    • implementing energy efficiency measures in company facilities, including data centers;
    • applying green building standards to the construction, renovation, maintenance, and operations of facilities; and
    • reducing business travel.
  • Help customers reduce energy use and related GHG emissions through Symantec software and services that optimize data center efficiency.
  • Participate in energy- and climate-related public policy efforts to protect the environment, encourage renewable energy production, and create “green” jobs in the technology sector.
We succeeded in reducing electricity use and the resulting Scope 2 GHG emissions between FY08 and FY09. Between FY09 and FY10, however, our electricity consumption increased due to the growth of two energy-intensive services: application hosting and data storage. Nonetheless, we remain committed to energy efficiency and to minimizing our company’s GHG emissions.
 
If our enterprise data center is excluded, the success of Symantec’s broader CO2 reduction efforts become apparent: global emissions exclusive of the enterprise data center decreased 11 percent in FY10 versus our FY08 base year.
 
In FY11, Symantec will set a new overall GHG-reduction goal in line with our growing business.
