Whether you’re seven or seventy years old, you know that teeth don’t last forever. Fortunately, however, there are ways to keep your current set bright and white for a long time. Although whitening treatments and products can bleach teeth super white, there are actually many easier and cheaper ways to enhance your smile. You can start with some of these tricks, but just be prepared to turn some heads afterwards:
1. Watch what you drink: Cutting back on liquids that stain your tooth enamel, like coffee, tea and red wine can significantly save your pearly whites. If you can’t quit your morning coffee binge, then at least try to brush your teeth soon after; another way to stop the stains is by drinking through a straw. And while smoothies are delicious treats, the berries in them can do a number on your teeth. Fortunately you can grab another berry – strawberry – and rub it on your teeth, since it contains an enzyme that works like a whitening agent! After, just be sure to rinse off the sugar and acid strawberries can leave behind.
2. Add some crunch to your lunch: Eating raw veggies like carrots, broccoli and celery can really help out your teeth. Just a quick snack can remove plaque and prevent a dull smile. Many crunchy fruits and vegetables also produce high salivary flows that help further reduce stains. Dark green veggies like romaine lettuce and spinach actually create a film that blocks stains from recurring! It’s just one more reason to get your daily dose of garden goodies!
3. Clean with at-home chemistry: Many teeth-whitening products can be found in your own home. Use a little hydrogen peroxide to brush your teeth then rinse with water – just don’t swallow! If you want t
o stay traditional, try dipping your toothbrush into a cup of baking soda.
4. Only use the best tools: An artist doesn’t use a dull paintbrush for his pictures, so why would you use a less-than-fresh toothbrush for your teeth? Change your toothbrush often and scrub gently. Moving a brush with soft bristles in circular motions is your best bet, although electric sonic toothbrushes can help swirl away stains. Brushing too hard can erode enamel and cause your gums to recede, so remember to use your weapon wisely!
Whether you have a yearbook photo, a romantic date or a job interview coming up, the good news is that a little extra TLC can quickly improve your smile. Create your own whitening paste or change up your daily meals for an impressive set of sparklers. You’ll save time, energy and even money in the long run!
