Warm weather, cold beverages and loud music – the holy trinity of the Summer music festival. Taking a page out of the Woodstock manual, concert promoters are securing some of the best live acts to come together for these once-in-a-lifetime, one-off performances. So, put on your walking shoes – here’s the lowdown on three of this Summer’s hottest music festivals.
Lollapalooza – Chicago, Illinois
Held in Chicago’s Grant Park, Lollapalooza is an annual music festival that prides itself on its diverse set of performers. While it was started in 1991 by Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band Jane’s Addiction, it has become a launching pad for many of rock’s most popular bands including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine Inch Nails and Smashing Pumpkins.
This year’s festival will bring together headlining acts ranging from Green Day to Phoenix to Lady Gaga, as well as up-and-comers such as New York City glam rock quartet Semi Precious Weapons and Christian rockers Switchfoot, whose music is most notable for being the backdrop to the chick-flick classic A Walk to Remember. Other artists tapped to take the stage include Soundgarden, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Social Distortion, MGMT, Erykah Badu, The Temper Trap and B.o.B. And for those looking for a bit of 80s nostalgia, Devo will also be on hand to whip it, whip it good.
Lollapalooza is taking place August 6 – 8, 2010 in Chicago’s Grant Park. For more details, visit www.lollapalooza.com.
Lilith Fair – Various Cities
Founded by Canadian songstress Sarah McLachlan and three others in 1997, Lilith Fair has been on a hiatus of sorts since 1999. Seeing a void in female-driven festivals, McLachlan has brought the traveling festival back and has lined up some of the best female artists to help raise money and awareness for women’s charities throughout North America and Europe.
While each city will see a slightly different lineup, artists signed on to perform across the cultural gambit. Young and old, pop and rock and even a little country – there is something for everyone at Lilith Fair 2010. Kelly Clarkson, Rhianna, Sugarland, Mary J. Blige, Carly Simon, Queen Latifah and, of course, Sarah McLachlan are just some of the performers that will be on hand for the event.

V Festival - South Staffordshire & Essex, England
Looking for a more international experience? Then look no further than the V Festival in England. From Glastonbury to Reading, the UK takes great pride in its music festivals and V is no exception. Getting in might prove difficult, however, as these tickets typically sell out within minutes of going on sale.
This year’s headliners are the Nashville-based rock band Kings of Leon who are riding high following the success of their hit singles Use Somebody and Sex on Fire. Also taking the stage are international phenoms David Guetta, The Prodigy and the Pet Shop Boys, as well as UK superstars such as Mika, Cheryl Cole and Calvin Harris.
The V Festival takes place August 21 – 22, 2010. For complete details, including a schedule of events and performers, visit www.vfestival.com.
