EPpy Awards Finalists Announced

New York (April 3, 2003) – The Washington Post Company’s online service, washingtonpost.com, is a finalist in 5 categories that were subjected to preliminary round judging in the 2003 EPpy Awards competition, leading a parade of nearly 100 entries that advanced to the finals in 20 categories. The 2003 EPpy Awards competition is sponsored by Editor & Publisher (E&P) and MediaWeek magazines.

The EPpy Awards, which are now in their eighth year, identify and honor the best work in the Internet field by media outlets, including newspapers, radio, and broadcast/cable TV. EPpy winners will be announced at the Interactive Media Conference and Trade Show, May 7-9, 2003 at the Paradise Point Resort in San Diego.

Washingtonpost.com was named a finalist by the EPpy judges in the large business category (more than 1 million monthly Web site visitors) for Best Overall Newspaper Affiliated Internet Service; Best Internet Sports Service; Best Internet Entertainment Service; Best Use of Rich Media; and Best Internet Classified Service.

Other media outlets that emerged from preliminary judging with multiple finalists include The New York Times on the Web, Newsday.com, Boston.com, MSNBC.com, HGTV.com, Jacksonville.com, StarTriburne.com, Thirteen Online and FT.com.

The 2003 EPpy Awards attracted more than 400 entries, necessitating a preliminary round of judging in 20 of the 29 award categories. In a month-long process during which three judges evaluated each site, the top three (plus ties) in each category moved into the finals, along with entries in the 9 categories that were small enough to judge in one round.

“We are certainly enthused by the overwhelming response that this year’s EPpy Awards have received,” said Matt Pollock, Director of Conferences and Events for Adweek Magazines. “Even in our new categories – for radio and TV-cable – the interest in the EPpy Awards has been phenomenal.”
