Ten bucks still goes a long way in Scranton, Pa. For $10 in annual dues ($15 for couples), members of the Greater Scranton Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association enjoy an annual all-you-can-eat pizza party, discounts to Scranton area restaurants and businesses, and a full calendar of Penn State-related activities.
Football season finds the Greater Scranton Chapter in what can only be called a “blitz.” Traveling to Happy Valley for a game? They charter buses for several home games as well as the game at Syracuse this year, and the chapter hosts tailgates at each home game. Can’t make it to Beaver Stadium? Join them for game-watching parties at Sno Grille, a restaurant at Sno Mountain, Pa. Want to return for homecoming? Gas up the motorhome and join their RV caravan to University Park to march in the Homecoming Parade.
And that’s just the fall lineup. Each July, the chapter runs a bus trip to the Arts Festival, and on the other side of football season, they organize a winter weekend for basketball fans. They also host a freshmen sendoff each summer and their trademark Penn State Night, a fundraising dinner that draws a large crowd each year. This year’s dinner featured Caoch Joe Paterno, Alumni Association President David Han ’88, ’05g, and radio personality Steve Jones, among others.
Not surprisingly, the chapter has doubled its membership in the last four years to more than 500 people. They’ve also won a lion’s share of Alumni Association awards: Fellowship and Networking Award, 2005 and 2007 and the P.R.I.D.E. Award (now called the Joint Activity Award), 2001.
The Greater Scranton Chapter gives generously each year to Penn State Worthington Scranton, the Blue Band, sports teams, student scholarships, and faculty research. They also reach into their community, hosting “BINGO with the Vets” at the Gino Merli Veterans’ Center and providing food baskets during the holiday season.
The chapter was chartered more than 30 years ago and serves Penn Staters in Lackawanna, Wyoming, and parts of Susquehanna counties in Pennsylvania. Five officers and 12 board members oversee chapter activities, including quarterly newsletters, a monthly e-newsletter, and the Web site.
