Several
athletes from the region turned in stellar performances at the 12th Annual
Great Floridian Triathlon on October 12th in Clermont, Fla. The race
served as the USA Triathlon national championship for the iron-distance,
featuring a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and a 26.2-mile run. Two of the top 10 men’s finishers were from
the Mid-Atlantic region as were 3 of the top 10 women. Regional members also captured numerous age
group awards.
Peter
Kotland (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Sara Weaver (Naples, Fla.) won the men’s and
women’s races. Kotland rolled off a
3:05:29 marathon to finish in a time of 9:23:20, winning by 11 minutes over Adam
Carlson (Atlanta, Ga.). Weaver’s
finishing time of 10:40:07 bested second place woman, Kim Donaldson (St.
Petersburg, Fla.) by over 20 minutes.
The top
male finisher from the Mid-Atlantic region was Chris Gebhardt (Fort Lee, N.J.), who finished 5th
overall in 9:49:01. Erik DeRoche (Charlotte, N.C.) finished
in 9th place in 9:55:58. The
top female finisher from the region was Lisa
Warren (Sykesville, Pa.), whose 11:39:02 was good enough for 5th
place overall. Kathleen Malone (Columbus, N.C.) finished close behind in 6th
place in 11:39:54 and Jacqueline Miller
(Pineville, N.C.) finished in 7th place in 11:45:30.
