2008 Investment Research Challenge Picks Up Steam

Students in the
2008 Investment Research Challenge participated in two events in February: the company presentation held on February 5 and the "Navigating Wall Street" panel on February 7.

The company presentation featured Gordon F. DuGan, CEO and president of the subject company of this year’s challenge, W. P. Carey & CO. LLC (NYSE: WPC). DuGan gave an overview of W. P. Carey before opening the floor to questions. Students will use the information gathered at the presentation to complement their research and help them compose their written reports.

The "Navigating Wall Street" panel featured a group of high-level financial executives mentoring the IRC students on how to avoid the common pitfalls and mistakes through their experiences on Wall Street. Speakers included: John J. McCabe, senior vice president/chief investment strategist, Shay Assets Management, Inc.; Steven C. Kenny, vice president of buy-side strategy, Reuters America, Inc.; and Bernadette Murphy, managing director, Kimelman & Baird.

NYSSA is hosting a reception on March 28 to announce the four teams with the highest scores from the written reports.  These teams will present to a panel of Wall Street experts on April 9. The winning team from New York will compete against teams from across the globe in the Global Finals. The Global Finals competition began in 2007 and consists of winning teams from Europe, Asia, and North America. The 2008 Global Finals will take place on May 1 at Reuters in New York City.

The Investment Research Challenge is an eight-month educational initiative in which industry professionals teach area business and finance students how to research and report on a publicly traded company.
