Vehicle Profile: The 2012 Ford Edge Sport

Crossovers have captured the hearts of millions of buyers by blending the best elements of truck-based SUVs with the comfort and handling of traditional family sedans. Rugged utility and all-weather security dovetailed with a quiet interior, sharper handling and better fuel economy; that’s the ideal match for shoppers looking for an all-around vehicle that is perfect for long commutes, family travel and weekend runs to big-box stores. The one thing buyers would likely never expect from a crossover is high-performance, but the 2012 Ford Edge Sport is here to shatter expectations.

Since its introduction, the five-passenger Ford Edge (MSRP $27,750) has become the most popular midsize crossover on the market with more than 500,000 vehicles sold. Last year, Ford gave its bestseller a thorough refurbishing that included chassis revisions, bolder styling, a tonier interior and MyFord Touch driver connect technology. Occupying the top tier in the model lineup, the new 2012 Ford Edge Sport (MSRP $37,090) adds a healthy spark of high performance to the crossover equation while delivering a broad array of features and 68.9 cubic feet of maximum cargo space.

Cementing its performance credentials, the Edge Sport shares its 3.7-liter V6 powerplant with the iconic Ford Mustang, the most popular pony car of all time. Making a road-stomping, best-in-class 305 hp and 280 lb/ft of torque, the 3.7-liter V6 benefits from such advanced engine technology as Twin independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT), which helps increase fuel efficiency and deliver strong pull throughout the rev range. For drivers who appreciate the sound as much as the feel of high performance, the Edge Sport features a chrome-tipped dual exhaust system, emitting a note that reviewers at Car and Driver magazine describe as “a sharp, pleasant bark.”

Power surges to the front wheels through a standard six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission, complete with steering wheel-mounted paddleshifters for drivers who prefer the feel of a manual transmission. Active All-Wheel Drive is available to enhance traction and handling, regardless of road conditions. In concert with standard AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control, the all-wheel drive system prevents wheel slip and counters skids by automatically redistributing engine torque and applying the anti-lock brakes.

You can expect the Edge Sport to return an impressive, EPA-estimated 26 highway mpg when equipped with front-wheel drive.
The Edge Sport boosts its high-performance bona fides with a sport-tuned suspension with stiffer rear springs and model-exclusive shocks. Another model exclusive: Standard 22-inch polished aluminum-alloy wheels.

Along with standard traction control and Hill Start Assist, the Edge Sport boasts a slate of available driver-assistance technology. The available Blind-Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert uses radar to notify you when vehicles have entered blind spots, and the standard Rearview Camera reveals the area behind the vehicle on an LCD screen for safe backing maneuvers.
Such exclusive driver safety innovations helped the Edge earn a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Also contributing was a protective cocoon of passive and active restraints including the Ford Safety Canopy System, which features extended-duration side-curtain airbags that protect the heads of outboard occupants in the event of a rollover.

You’ll find innovative technology on display inside the Edge Sport as well. Standard MyFord Touch broadens the capabilities and features of the award-winning Ford SYNC® telematics system to make connecting with your car and the outside world easier than ever via steering wheel-mounted buttons, touch controls and voice commands. The system’s centerpiece is an eight-inch touchscreen, mounted high in the center stack, that gives you intuitive control over a variety of vehicle systems (including navigation, audio and Bluetooth-enabled phone) through customizable displays.

A premium, 390-watt Sony Audio System comes standard on the Edge Sport with 12 speakers, Digital Signal Processing and HD Radio. The standard Media Hub delivers two USB ports, an SD card reader and video input jacks.

Supercharge your infotainment experience in the Edge Sport by selecting available upgrades such as the Voice-Activated Navigation System with Sirius Traffic and Sirius Travel Link, and the rear-seat DVD entertainment system with two independent, seven-inch LCD widescreen monitors mounted in the backs of the front-seat headrests.

Luxury is served on the Edge Sport with an exclusive Charcoal Black interior complemented by Liquid Silver Smoke appliqués. The seats are Charcoal Black with Silver Smoke Metallic leather-trimmed inserts and contrast stitching. On the outside, a Tuxedo-Black painted grille announces the model’s road-dominating intentions, as do refinements such as body-colored exterior trim and exclusive headlamp and taillamp appearance treatments.

In keeping with its status as alpha wolf in the Edge lineup, the Sport offers a long list of standard amenities including heated front seats, remote keyless entry, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 10-way power driver’s seat and a six-way power front passenger’s seat that folds flat. Highlights on the options list include a Panoramic Vista Roof and Intelligent Access with Push Button Start.

Summing up their experience road testing the Edge Sport, the editors at Car and Driver fittingly pronounced it “by far the sportiest of American-branded crossovers.” Hot shoe crossover enthusiasts can perform their own evaluations of the new 2012 Ford Edge Sport by scheduling a test drive today.
