Vehicle Preview: The Intelligent 2011 Scion iQ
The all-new 2011 Scion iQ is a premium micro-subcompact car that takes the “less is more” approach to an entirely new level.
Bringing the premium micro-car concept into the 21st century, the 2011 Scion iQ incorporates a score of space-saving technologies and production techniques that allow it to deliver the real-world practicality and comfort drivers would expect in a car twice as large. The three-door adopts a hatchback body style that maximizes interior space, and the iQ features “3+1” seating, which makes use of offset front buckets with the 
slimmest possible seatbacks to open up enough room in the rear for both an adult (behind the front passenger) and a child (or pet or small package, behind the driver) – a most innovative arrangement. Other innovations such as a flat fuel tank under the floor and an inverted front-mounted differential help create surprising amounts of interior space. In fact, with the rear bench folded flat, the iQ easily accommodates two full sets of golf clubs in its cargo area.
The iQ is loaded with the very latest in active and passive safety technologies. Driver and passengers are surrounded by 10 different airbags including front, knee and seat-mounted side airbags for front occupants, side-curtain airbags, a new driver’s seat-cushion airbag and the world’s first rear-window curtain airbag. Helping to prevent accidents and keep the iQ safely between the lines in all sorts of weather and driving conditions are systems such as standard Traction Control (TRAC), Scion’s Vehicle Stability Control and antilock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist.
Part and parcel of the iQ’s eco-friendly design is its 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine. Capable of generating over 90 hp, this motor uses dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) technology to help produce ultra-low emissions and consume as little fuel as possible. The iQ will qualify as an Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle II (ULEV-II), and fuel economy is expected to be rated in the high 30s. Efficiency is further enhanced by the iQ’s automatic Continuously Variable Transmission.
