Shop Talk With Jim

December: Checking your Tire Pressure

Shop talk with Jim features Mr. Jim Raney who has been in the service industry for over 20 years as a Service Technician, Master Technician, and Parts and Services Manager. Each month we sit down with Jim to get tips and tricks to make sure our cars are performing properly and to answer any questions our readers may have.

Taylor: So Jim, how do you check your tire pressure? What tools do you need and how do I know what pressure to inflate them to?

Jim: "Often times consumers only worry about tires after they have a flat or they begin to sag on the bottom. Having a proactive approach to tire care can save you time and money as well as keep you and your loved ones safe."

"Proper tire inflation and regular balancing can help maximize fuel economy and minimize your tire wear. When you are inspecting your tires be sure to check your spare. I recommend that my customer check their tire pressure every few weeks and right before heading out on a major trip."

"To check you tires pressure you first need to know how much air to put in each tire and every car is different. The recommended pressure can usually be found in either your owners manual or a plaque on the inside of your driverside door."

"After determining how much air pressure is required you will need a tire guage which can be found at any local auto part store. Be sure that you haven't driven your car for an extended period of time because the heat can cause an unaccurate reading. Unscrew the cap of the valve stem and firmly apply the gauge to the stem, repeat the process after obtaining the reading at least once more to ensure and accurate reading."

"Once you obtain an accurate PSI head to the nearest gas station or air fill up location to fill up your tire. Make sure not to over or underfill you tire, this can cause improper wear and can effect gas mileage and tire life."

Please note that South Point KIA will gladly check your tires for proper inflation for free. If you are interested in having your tires checked as well as getting them balanced and rotated please check out,
