Penn State Hockey Skates into NHL Arenas
The Penn State men's ice hockey team will take part in two inaugural hockey events in coming weeks in Pennsylvania's eastern and western ends: the Philadelphia College Hockey Faceoff and the Three Rivers Classic in Pittsburgh.
Three Rivers Classic—Dec. 28–29
Four NCAA Division I men's hockey teams will be squaring off on the Pittsburgh Penguins' ice at the CONSOL Energy Center the weekend of Dec. 28–29: Robert Morris, Ohio State, Miami (Ohio) and Penn State.
The Nittany Lions will play against Robert Morris at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28. Immediately following the game, there will be a meet-and-greet with hockey Head Coach Guy Gadowsky and some of the hockey players to give the fan base an opportunity to meet them up close. Be sure to check for the location on the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter's website later in December.
All four teams will be able to play in two games. On Saturday, Dec. 29, the consolation game is at 4:30 p.m. and the championship game is at 7:30 p.m. From 3:30–9:00 p.m. on Saturday, alumni can enjoy good company in the Lexus Room at the CONSOL Energy Center. This gathering, free to all Penn Staters and friends, will be jointly supported by the Penn State Alumni Association and the Nittany Lion Club, and co-hosted by the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter, the Smeal Business Club—Pittsburgh (Affiliate Program Group of the Penn State Alumni Association) and the Alle-Kiski (Penn State New Kensington) Alumni Society. Food available for purchase on levels three and six and may be brought into the exclusive Lexus Club, where guests can savor picture-perfect views of downtown Pittsburgh. "Hopefully this will be an annual thing," said Tim King '81, vice president of the Alumni Association's Greater Pittsburgh Chapter and an organizer for the alumni reception. "We would like to show the Penguins that the hockey team has a good following here in Pittsburgh. If we generate enough alumni interest here, they'll want to invite the Penn State men's hockey team back in future years."
This is Penn State's first season at the Division I level. Robert Morris has just finished the two-best seasons in its program's history. In the past 10 years, Ohio State and Miami have combined to make 12 NCAA Tournament appearances.
