2 Penn State Family Days in June
Railroading and a beautiful, stately ship. Two of Pennsylvania’s treasures will be the sites for family-oriented City Lights events this June—one in Altoona, Pa., and one in Erie, Pa. Both are daylong outings for the whole family, and there’s still time to get on board.
“All Aboard: The Heritage and Future of Pennsylvania Railroading” on June 9
Visit the famous Horseshoe Curve, Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum and a private exhibit of the work of William Herman Rau, one of the most accomplished photographers in Pennsylvania Railroad history, during this full day of railroading exploration. Hear about the rail industry’s past, present and future influence on the Central Pennsylvania region from Gerhard A. Thelen ’79g, with Norfolk Southern Corporation.
The cost is $20 for Alumni Association members, $35 for non-members and $15 for children (6–18 years old; under 5 are free). The price includes breakfast, the Railroaders Memorial Museum tour, the Horseshoe Curve tour, lunch and closing refreshments. This event is co-sponsored by Penn State Altoona. Register now.

“Lake Erie’s Maritime History” on June 16
Enjoy a day of maritime fun for the entire family on June 16 with alum expert David Boughton ’86, maritime education specialist for the Pennsylvania Sea Grant. Alumni, family and friends will have the opportunity to explore the Erie Maritime Museum and its interactive exhibits. As homeport of the Flagship Niagara, the Erie Maritime Museum also offers guests the opportunity to set sail on the reconstructed flagship of Pennsylvania, which won the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812. While aboard the Niagara, Boughton will describe the work of the Pennsylvania Sea Grant and its Shipboard Education Program reaching more than 10,000 students.
The cost is $25 for Alumni Association members, $40 for non-members and $15 for children (6–18 years old; under 5 are free). Please note that children must be at least 12 years old to board the Flagship Niagara.
