Vehicle Profile: The 2012 Volvo XC60 T6 AWD

Volvo has always created versatile vehicles. From the early days of the sporty-yet-practical PV444/544 models through the surprisingly fleet-footed 240 Turbo sedans and station wagons, there’s never been a shortage of practicality, or athleticism, from Göteborg. Sitting between XC60 3.2 and R-Design models, the five-passenger XC60 T6 AWD (MSRP $39,450) brings a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine to the party, along with 300 hp and 325 lb/ft of torque. A six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission, 18-inch Zephyrus alloy wheels and Touring chassis suspension calibration are standard. A Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) chassis that monitors the road, car and driver inputs 500 times per second is available and offers the driver a choice of three distinctive driving modes – “Comfort,” “Sport” and “Advanced.” Properly equipped, the XC60 T6 AWD can tow up to 3,300 pounds.
 
The All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction™ system in the XC60 T6 AWD constantly monitors wheel speed, throttle input, braking and engine speed and torque with an electronic management system that deftly and continuously supplies power to the wheels with the most grip. When a wheel loses traction, power to it is reduced and redirected to the other wheels. Drivers benefit from enhanced handling and optimal control in all conditions.
 
The XC60 exterior design successfully integrates traditional SUV elements with its muscular lower body design and high ground clearance while the fast taper of the roof contour suggests a sporty coupe. Vertical taillamps feature Volvo’s signature styling and use micro-optics and LED technology to maximize their light distribution. Handy roof rails are standard and are silver on T6 models, which can be easily recognized by their dual exhaust pipes and color-coordinated rear-view mirrors.
 
Drivers will find a lot to like in the interior of the XC60 T6, too. Volvo’s “floating” center console brings a bit of concept-car design to the production car world, and leather seating surfaces are standard. Aluminum inlays accent the dynamically designed interior, and optional wood inlays are available for a touch of classic elegance and warmth.
 
Information and entertainment are delivered by the Volvo Sensus system, which employs a seven-inch color screen. Buttons just below the screen and on the steering wheel make control of the system easy, intuitive and safe. The system integrates the available navigation system, phone, DVD player, and rear-view and panorama cameras, among other tricks. Bluetooth hands-free phone integration has been upgraded to include music streaming, and a new mobile application can be downloaded to your iPhone or Android device to allow communication between you and your XC60, even if it’s parked far away.
 
There are several additional equipment packages available for the 2012 XC60 T6 AWD. The Climate Package with Heated Rear Seats adds heated front and rear seats, heated windshield washer nozzles, headlight washers, a rain sensor for the windshield wipers and the Interior Air Quality System (IAQS). The Climate Package with Dual Two-stage Child Booster Seats includes all the other Climate Package items except the heated rear seats. Instead, it adds dual integrated two-stage child booster seats with adaptive seatbelts to the second row and power child-safety locks for the rear doors.
 
Opting for the Dynamic Package will get you Speed-Sensitive Steering with Driver Selectable Settings, Active Dual Xenon Headlamps and the Four-C Chassis. Finally, the Technology Package includes Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake, Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake, Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Driver Alert Control and Distance Alert. There is also a sizeable list of optional equipment and accessories available for the XC60 buyer from Park Assist and Integrated Navigation to a DVD entertainment system, scuff plates, bumper bars and more.
 
A strong body structure and Volvo safety technology – including City Safety, which can detect and prevent or mitigate collisions in stop-and-go traffic, Roll Stability Control and the Rollover Protection System – provide peace of mind. Dynamic Stability and Traction Control is also standard, and Volvo dual-stage front, side and side-curtain airbags are on deck as well. The available Driver Alert Control, which only operates at speeds exceeding 40 mph, works in concert with Lane Departure Warning to detect and warn of the signs of distracted driving.
