A Leader On- or Off-Road

Anyone who has been through the brutality of junior high school understands what a fair-weather friend is. Sport models also gain a new JBL audio system option, and mild trim and badging details round out the 2010 changes to Toyota's all-conquering crossover. When a vehicle is this good, drastic changes aren't needed.

The RAV4 is well-equipped from the word "go" with standard air conditioning, tilt/telescope steering wheel, an audio system with auxiliary input and six speakers, keyless entry and a thoughtfully designed cabin that maximizes comfort and convenience for passengers in all three rows of seats. Sport models add a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels, color-keyed fender flares and foglamps. Limited trims add in dual-zone air conditioning, an upgraded audio system, a leather-wrapped shiftknob, Smart Key system with push button start and more. Options can take the RAV4 into luxury territory with the addition of power leather seats and a touch-screen navigation system.

While the two-wheel drive model is all many buyers will need when availing themselves of the other charms the RAV4 has, such as a spacious interior, easy driving demeanor and high build quality, 4x4 RAV4s turn into little mud monsters. V6 RAV4s are not only fleet of foot, but a Tow Prep Package upgrades the radiator, fan and alternator to handle 3,500-pound loads. With the normal horse trailer weighing in at 2,600 pounds, the RAV4 can take you, the family and your prized thoroughbred over hill and dale without breaking a sweat.

There is no wrong choice when it comes to the 2010 Toyota RAV4 (MSRP $21,675). Since it arrived on the scene, this generation of Toyota's RAV4 has been getting top grades from automotive journalists; with Toyota's enhancements for 2010 onboard, that winning streak doesn't look like it'll be ending anytime soon.
