Vehicle Profile: The 2012 GMC Savana

The 2012 GMC Savana is the full-size people mover with flexible seating options and an appealing spectrum of V8 and diesel engine choices designed for the driver, family or business that just needs more from their van.

In half-ton 1500, 2500 and one-ton 3500 configurations with a regular or extended wheelbase (only on the 3500) and offered in 1LS or 1LT trim levels, the 2012 GMC Savana is designed with more function in mind. Available features include everything from heated power mirrors with integrated turn signals and a convenient sliding passenger’s side door to a Chrome Appearance Package and heavy-duty trailering equipment and wiring. Roofrack cross rails are available or, for businesses, a roof-mount Ladder Package is also available.

The Passenger version of the stalwart Savana (there is a Cargo version as well) offers the broadest selection of V8 engines in the van segment. Savana 1500 models get a 5.3-liter VortecÒ V8 that delivers 310 hp and 334 lb/ft of torque through a standard four-speed automatic and offers E85 FlexFuel capability. Savana 2500 models get a choice between a 280-hp 4.8-liter VortecÒ V8 or a more robust 324-hp 6.0-liter VortecÒ V8 (the most powerful V8 in its class). Both use a heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission and feature FlexFuel capability for enhanced efficiency.

Finally, the 3500 gets the option of the standard 6.0-liter V8 or an available Duramax 6.6-liter Turbo Diesel V8 (the most powerful diesel engine in the full-size van class). Through a standard six-speed automatic, and with the optional capability of accepting B20 biodiesel fuel, the Duramax 6.6-liter generates 260 hp and a healthy 525 lb/ft of torque.

Standard with rear-wheel drive, half-ton 1500 models also offer available All-Wheel Drive. The AWD system’s heavy-duty locking rear differential actively monitors vehicle conditions and proactively distributes power to individual wheels (or all, simultaneously) for optimal traction on slippery surfaces. All models come standard with the rollover-reducing, handling-enhancing StabiliTrak electronic stability control system.

Depending on your selected model, the 2012 Savana holds between eight and 15 passengers in a substantial cabin that offers impressive comfort, style and innovation including a sleek and modern instrument panel, an available leather-wrapped steering wheel (with audio controls), hands-free Bluetooth communication, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, keyless entry and remote start.

With so many passengers to account for, the 2012 Savana takes occupant safety quite seriously, featuring advanced glass for passenger retention, a reinforced frame and front and available three-row side-impact head-curtain airbags for protection. Like every GMC, the Savana comes standard with the safety, security and convenience of the OnStar system (featuring the Directions and Connections plan), as well as a five-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty with Roadside Assistance.

The 2012 GMC Savana Passenger features a starting MSRP of $28,940. Its Cargo counterpart starts at $25,090. Both iterations deliver full-size flexibility, functionality and V8 power, for when a minivan simply won’t do.
