Vehicle Overview: The 2013 Lexus GS Family

Completely redesigned for the 2013 model year, the Lexus GS Sport Sedan is great-looking, brimming with amenities, and delivers a driving experience without peer. Furthermore, there’s a GS sedan for everyone thanks to the multi-faceted approach Lexus took to GS powertrains and trim levels. Here’s a look at the 2013 GS sedans.

2013 Lexus GS 350

The new GS 350 (MSRP $46,900) has an almost two-inch wider track and a 14 percent more rigid body for 2013, and it introduces a completely new styling language to Lexus. With its new “spindle” grille and bold sheet metal, the GS 350 turns heads. It also has the muscle to back up those looks: a direct-injected 3.5-liter Dual VVT-i V6 making 306 hp and 277 lb/ft of torque. Lexus pairs the brawny six with an automatic six-speed Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) with Sequential Shift, complete with paddle shifters for sporty and involving manual control if the driver so desires.  Accelerating from zero to 60 mph takes just 5.7 seconds, and the GS 350 delivers 28 mpg highway. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is also offered. Drive Mode Select lets drivers set up the driving characteristics of the car for however they plan to be driving, be it “Eco,” “Normal,” or “Sport” mode.

2013 Lexus GS 350 F Sport

Like its sibling, the GS 350 F Sport has the 306-hp V6, but it dials up the athleticism thanks to F Sport suspension modifications that include stiffer springs, thicker anti-roll bars, Adaptive Variable Damping System, upgraded brakes, 19-inch staggered-width wheels and retuned steering. Also available on GS 350 F Sport models is the Lexus Dynamic Handling system with Dynamic Rear Steering. Rear-drive GS 350 F Sport models will feature performance summer tires, while AWD models will get all-season rubber. Visually, the GS 350 F Sport is distinguished by its unique front bumper and rear valance, “F Sport” badging and mesh grille inserts. Inside, the GS 350 F Sport can be had with a Cabernet Red leather interior that’s exclusive to the model.

2013 Lexus GS 450h

Drivers who wish to reduce their vehicle emissions and use less gasoline can opt for the greenest GS overall, a GS Hybrid that maintains the sporty character established by the GS 350. It features the world’s first direct injected Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V6 paired with the Lexus dual hybrid-motor system to produce 338 total system horsepower. The efficient powertrain is estimated to deliver 31 mpg in combined use and is actually a hair quicker from zero-to-60 than its gas-only sibling, at 5.6 seconds. Going “green” doesn’t mean sacrificing fun.

A spectacular, high-quality interior

Every 2013 Lexus GS boasts a lavish cabin that sweats every detail, from the contrasting stitching on the seats, dash, and door panels, to the various wood inserts, to the leather-covered, ergonomically designed driver’s seat, which can be had with 18-way adjustment that ensures every driver will be able to find a comfortable position. The cockpit layout emphasizes openness and embraces technology.

A 5.1 Surround audio system is standard, along with satellite radio, Bluetooth, full iPod compatibility, and an eight-inch display. Of course, this can be upgraded to a 17-speaker, 835-watt, custom-tuned Mark Levinson audiophile audio system with digital amplification and almost zero distortion. This system’s GreenEdge speakers are lightweight and more efficient, yet twice as powerful as traditional speakers.

The GS can also be outfitted with a stunning, industry-first 12.3-inch high-resolution multimedia display in the dashboard that can display maps from the available navigation system at the same time as other information (like your radio info) via a split-screen view. Matte bamboo trim is exclusive to the hybrid model.

Safety remains paramount

In the unlikely event of an accident, the Lexus GS stands ready to protect all occupants. It’s named a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, meaning it achieved the best possible score in each of that independent body’s crash and roof-strength evaluations. In addition to the standard Antilock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control and advanced airbags, the new GS offers useful driver aids like available Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, the Night Vision system, a Blind Spot Monitor, Adaptive Front Lighting, and Lane Keep Assist. The available Pre-Collision System can monitor you, as well as the road ahead. If the GS detects an imminent collision, it warns the driver, and, if there’s no reaction, it can start braking automatically to help mitigate any impact.
