Vehicle Profile: The 2012 Honda Civic
Few automobiles have ever earned the rock-solid reputation of the Honda Civic. Representing the ninth generation of the nameplate, the all-new 2012 Honda Civic is more refined, offers increased fuel economy, provides class-leading interactive technologies and engages the driver with enhanced performance. It’s a combined package that once again sets the benchmark for other manufacturers to follow.
The 2012 Civic lineup (MSRP starting at $15,605) includes six distinct variants that run the gamut from ultra-high efficiency to high performance: Civic Sedan, Civic Coupe, Civic HF, Civic Si Sedan and Civic Si Coupe, Civic Hybrid and Civic GX (a natural gas-powered compact available at qualified Honda dealers.) The Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe models are further delineated into four trim levels designed to provide drivers with the individualization they crave in a compact car: Civic DX, Civic LX, Civic EX and Civic EX-L.
The bedrock beneath all the Civic models and trim levels is the commitment to the core values that have made the Civic such a driveway staple for nine generations: safety, value, fun-to-drive performance, comfort, convenience, durability, quality and refinement.
Occupant safety begins with the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure beneath the skin of every Honda Civic. Frontal collision energy management and vehicle-to-vehicle crash compatibility are built into the structure of the Civic, providing the first line of defense for occupants in the event of a crash. Two-row side-curtain airbags and dual-stage, multiple-threshold driver and front passenger airbags help to cushion the impact while Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) and anti-lock brakes with Brake Assist help to avoid a crash in the first place. The new Motion Adaptive Electric Power Steering system helps drivers steer in the ideal direction, helping to avoid oversteer or understeer situations. With all its built-in safety equipment, it’s not surprising that the Civic was once again the recipient of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) “Top Safety Pick” designation.
Every iteration of the Civic has been fun to drive, and the 2012 editions continue the trend. The MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension, and front and rear stabilizer bars, provide a satisfying combination of comfort and performance. The Civic is equipped with standard 15-inch, 16-inch and 17-inch wheels, depending on model and trim.
All trims of the Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe feature an advanced, 140-hp 1.8-liter VTEC® engine with a choice of a five-speed manual transmission or a five speed automatic transmission, again depending on trim. The Civic EX Sedan, Civic EX-L trims and Civic HF all feature an automatic transmission as standard equipment. For the performance oriented, the Civic Si provides 201 hp from a 2.4-liter i-VTEC® engine, paired with a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission for the ultimate in driver interaction. The ultra-fuel efficient Civic Hybrid utilizes a 1.5-liter i-VTEC® engine with Integrated Motor Assist®, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Civic Hybrid is capable of fuel economy EPA-estimated at 44 mpg, both in the city and on the highway.
The all-new 2012 Honda Civic treats occupants to an interior intensely focused on comfort, convenience and personalization. The design achieves what Honda calls a “smart interface” approach, dividing the instrument panel into distinct areas with vital information displays located above the steering wheel where the driver can see it. Secondary information is located lower in the area, and a third region, to the driver’s right, provides controls and functions not essential to the task of driving. Whether you choose the Civic Hybrid or not, you’ll appreciate Eco Assist™ , a standard feature on all Civics except the Civic Si, which offers helpful green and blue “coaching bars” on either side of the speedometer. When the bars are green, you’re maximizing fuel economy. The newly introduced, intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) on every Civic but the Civic DX provides a five-inch color monitor that displays vehicle and audio information including album artwork. Customizable settings allow drivers to upload personal wallpaper backgrounds. In place of Eco Assist™ in the Civic Si, drivers can monitor a new Sequential Rev-limit Indicator and a Power Monitor screen.
The all-new 2012 Honda Civic offers a wide range of configurations to satisfy customers who want a more luxurious automobile, those who want to maximize fuel efficiency or performance or both, and those who want it all.
