Vehicle Profile: The 2011 Volkswagen Touareg
If Hollywood followed the example of the Volkswagen Touareg, sequels to popular movies would be even more enjoyable than the originals. All-new for 2011, the second-generation Volkswagen Touareg inherits the spotlight and delivers an even more compelling performance.
The first Volkswagen Touareg set a high standard in performance, all-road all-weather capability and German-engineered luxury. The second-generation Touareg exceeds those standards and sets new benchmarks. Notably, even with greater performance across the Touareg model line, all models also return improved fuel economy. A re-engineered body structure features laser seam welding instead of spot welding for continuously sealed seams and greater safety and stability. Changes in some materials helped pare 350 pounds from the vehicle, an enhancement that helps improve efficiency and agility.
Volkswagen offers three distinct Touareg models for 2011, defined by their powertrains: The 3.6-liter VR6 FSI® Sport gasoline engine, the new 3.0-liter V6 TDI® Clean Diesel and the world’s first-ever supercharged hybrid powertrain, the 3.0-liter V6 TSI® Hybrid. The hybrid replaces the V8 model as the top-of-the-range Touareg, offering both better performance and reduced fuel consumption compared to the V8. In all 2011 Touareg models, a new eight-speed automatic transmission plays a vital role in improving both performance and fuel economy.
Starting at an MSRP of $44,450, the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg offers the amenities, refinement, safety and capability of luxury-brand SUVs – and then some. A key part of the value story is that all 2011 Touareg models come standard with the brand’s renowned 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. In comparison, all-wheel drive is an extra-cost option in the 2011 Mercedes-Benz ML350.
The 2011 Volkswagen Touareg offers more interior room than the previous model, courtesy of a longer wheelbase. You can adjust space for passengers and cargo by sliding the rear seat fore and aft, and passengers can choose one of three backrest angles to tailor comfort. Cargo room starts out at 32.1 cubic feet behind the rear seat and expands to 70.9 cubic feet with the rear 60/40-split seatbacks folded down. The standard power tailgate makes access convenient via the remote control key fob.
Choosing your level of luxury is easy in the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg. The VR6 and TDI® Clean Diesel models come in standard Sport trim with 18-inch wheels and offer “Lux” and “Executive” upgrade packages with 19- and 20-inch wheels, respectively. The Touareg Hybrid comes in one fully equipped trim line with 19-inch wheels. The Lux and Executive trim lines, as well as the Touareg Hybrid, let nature in through a new two-panel panoramic sunroof.
All 2011 Touareg models earn the “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Which Touareg suits you? The 2011 Touareg VR6 FSI® Sport delivers 280 hp from its smooth 3.6-liter Fuel Stratified Injection gasoline engine, “FSI” indicating direct fuel injection. What you really feel when you drive this model, however, is the thrust of 265 lb/ft of torque, available from 2,500 to 5,000 rpm. Acceleration from zero-to-60 mph in 7.4 seconds and powerful passing performance come along with a 19 percent improvement in overall fuel economy over the previous model.
The Touareg V6 TDI® (Turbocharged Direct Injection) Clean Diesel will create a new wave of diesel fans with its massive 406 lb/ft of torque on the one hand, and its remarkable 28 mpg highway fuel economy on the other. This 225-hp engine delivers its torque wallop at a low 1,750 to 2,250 rpm, making it an ideal tow vehicle. All 2011 Touareg models come rated to tow up to 7,700 pounds when equipped with the factory-installed Tow Package.
The 2011 Touareg V6 TSI® Hybrid innovatively blends the power of a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 Turbocharged Stratified Injection engine with an electric motor and nickel metal-hydride battery pack. This one’s a real powerhouse with a combined system output of 380 hp and 425 lb/ft of torque. As a result, it’s the quickest-performing 2011 Touareg model with zero-to-60 mph in just 6.2 seconds. Highway fuel economy comes in at 24 mpg. That matches the 2011 Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid, which offers significantly less power and acceleration performance than the Touareg Hybrid.
Comfort abounds in the Touareg, which offers standard heated front seats, Climatronic® dual-zone climate control and the latest infotainment and connectivity features. Notably, a hard drive-based navigation system with rearview camera comes standard in all 2011 Touareg models. The brand’s premium RNS 850 touchscreen radio-navigation system features an eight-inch LCD screen, a DVD/CD player with MP3 capability, Bluetooth connectivity and SIRIUS Satellite Radio. Its 60GB hard drive reserves a generous 18GB of space to store uploaded media. Plus, you can easily connect your iPod.
