Lincoln knows a thing or two about luxury. After all, the brand has been building and selling luxury automobiles for nearly 100 years. Perhaps no vehicle epitomizes that commitment to quality and design perfection more than the new 2013 LINCOLN MKT luxury crossover.
The LINCOLN MKT (MSRP $45,285), with seating for six or seven, has a fresh design for 2013 including an elegant new front fascia and reworked taillamps. Inside, the LINCOLN MKT features even more high-quality materials than the outgoing model. For 2013, an updated powertrain in the LINCOLN MKT includes a standard 3.7-liter V6 with Twin independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) that now boasts 300 hp and 275 lb/ft of torque. That’s a full 32 hp more than the outgoing model and more than both the Audi Q7 and the Acura MDX. That extra punch won’t cost drivers at the pump, however. The EPA estimates 25 mpg highway and 17 mpg city fuel economy for the 2013 LINCOLN MKT, up from the previous model and again better than the competition.
Lincoln is also offering an even more powerful, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. The twin-turbocharged engine delivers 365 hp and 350 lb/ft of torque. That’s the kind of power crossover shoppers expect from a V8, but the LINCOLN MKT manages to out-muscle the competition while delivering fuel economy equivalent to a V6. A six-speed SelectShift Automatic® transmission with Paddle Activation is standard with both powertrains (a heavy-duty version comes in EcoBoost-equipped models), and both offer standard front-wheel drive or available Intelligent All-Wheel Drive.
More power and improved efficiency are impressive adds, but fans of sporty handling will also want improved driving dynamics. Lincoln delivers with its dynamic new Continuously Controlled Damping technology. The system, which is available exclusively on EcoBoost-equipped LINCOLN MKT models, feeds data from 46 inputs to a control unit that monitors 23,000 packets of information per second. This data is calculated 500 times per second, which helps adjust optimal damping force in only 11 milliseconds. The result is that the 2013 LINCOLN MKT will handle more like a sports sedan than a roomy, three-row crossover.
The 2013 LINCOLN MKT also features Lincoln Drive Control. This highly advanced system affords the driver a choice of three driving modes: “Normal,” “Sport” and “Comfort.” The “Comfort” setting delivers a plush ride for long trips and worry-free commutes. “Sport” tightens up the suspension by 25 to 30 percent, delivering a sporty feel and bringing the driving dynamics of the LINCOLN MKT to a whole new level.
The 2013 LINCOLN MKT also features an impressive upgrade to the SYNC® with MyLincoln Touch™ interface. MyLincoln Touch offers impressive, advanced voice recognition and simple, customizable one-touch access to climate, information and entertainment controls. In addition to advanced voice control, the MyLincoln Touch system also features a brilliant LCD screen that controls entertainment, navigation and vehicle information. Those controls are duplicated in the center with two more 4.2-inch LCD screens that can be controlled via a pair of five-way steering wheel controls that help the driver keep hands on the wheel and eyes straight ahead.
Inside, drivers will be met with upscale touches such as Scottish Bridge of Weir leather (also found in luxury jets and yachts), a standard Panoramic fixed glass Vista Roof™, 12-way power seats and power-adjustable pedals. A heated steering wheel, heated and cooled second-row seats, a 700-watt THX II audio system with 14 speakers and a navigation system are all available options. Extra measures were also taken to add to interior quietness as well.
The 2013 LINCOLN MKT has an upgraded braking system, for extra stopping power to match its extra horsepower. Other helpful features include the available Lane Keeping System, which helps drivers avoid unintentionally leaving their lane, and segment-first inflatable second-row outboard safety belts.
The 2013 LINCOLN MKT is a quantum leap above and beyond any other vehicle in the full-size luxury crossover market. The good news is that buyers will soon be able to get their hands on the latest and greatest in Lincoln technology. The 2013 LINCOLN MKT begins arriving in dealerships this spring.
