Vehicle Profile: 2013 BMW X6

The second it breached the spotlight as a concept vehicle at the Frankfurt Motor Show back in 2007, the X6 proved that dreams can come true. Namely the dreams of BMW engineers and designers who believed that the agile handling and brute power of a sport coupe could be melded with the roomy practicality and all-weather versatility of a sport utility and then wrapped in a sleek curvaceous shape unlike anything else on the road today. The 2013 BMW X6 proves that dreams never die, as the world’s first Sport Activity Coupe benefits form a host of upgrades guaranteed to keep it a standout for years to come.

Sales for the X6 have totaled more than 150,000 units worldwide since it first reached showrooms as a 2009 model. The appeal of the X6 lies in that unique alchemy first envisioned by the firebrand thinkers at BMW. Who else would choose to blend premium luxury, a pair of high-power, turbocharged engines and driving dynamics fit for laps around the Nurburgring Circuit in an all-wheel-drive vehicle with hatchback accessibility and a maximum cargo capacity of nearly 60 cubic feet? That same paradigm-shattering spirit informs the host of improvements you’ll find on the new 2013 BMW X3.

BMW sells the X6 in two models: the xDrive35i (MSRP: $59,800) and the xDrive50i (MSRP: $70,400).

Without a doubt the aspect of the X6 that captures immediate attention is its aggressive styling language – praised by automotive reviewers as both ground-breaking and self-assured. To keep in step with recent re-stylings of its 3 Series and 5 Series siblings, the new X6 gains a revised front fascia for 2013.

Foglights have been repositioned within the outer air inlets to emphasize the width of the vehicle and receive a matt-finish. The iconic kidney grille grows more dominant thanks to redesigned grille bars angled flush with the bottom edge of the standard Xenon headlights. LED headlights are now available (making the X6 the first in its segment to offer such an upgrade), complete with luminous rings – a BMW family signature. At the rear, the taillights now feature distinct LED light bars that stretch out to the fenders to underscore the vehicle’s substantial width.

Customizing your new X6 grows easier thanks to a freshened exterior-paint palette with nine metallic colors and two non-metallic hues to choose from. The xDrive50i gains a new standard 19-inch light-alloy-wheel style. Inside, standard Nevada leather upholstery is now available in Vermillion Red, while the upgraded Nappa leather gains a new color: Ivory White. An available three-seat second-row bench boosts total occupancy to five.

The exceptional engine choices in the X6 hold fast for 2013, with the xDrive35i boasting a TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder producing 300 hp and featuring a dual overhead cam, piezo direct fuel injection and Double-VANOS steplessly variable valve timing. Acceleration to 60 mph is impressive at 6.3 seconds, as is fuel economy with this 4,784 pound crossover returning 23 mpg on the highway.

To satisfy devotees of sheer brute force, BMW anchored its 400-hp, 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 under the hood of the X6 xDrive50i -- creating a genuine land rocket capable of launching from zero-to-60 mph in 5.2 seconds.

Realizing there’s always room for even more power, BMW introduces the M Performance Package on the 2013 X6. By dialing in more boost  (twin scroll only on 6-cylinder), engineers raised output on both engines – pumping the xDrive35i to 315 hp and the xDrive50i to 440 hp. But the package offers more than extra power. You also get such cosmetic enhancements as black chrome exhaust tips, stainless-steel pedals, an anthracite headliner, 20-inch Y-Spoke aluminum wheels and Carbon Black metallic paint as an option.

Regardless of output levels, both engines are mated to an eight-speed Sport Automatic transmission complete with Adaptive Transmission Control, Sport and Manual shift modes and paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel. Power flows to all four wheels via the intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which includes Dynamic Stability Control and Dynamic Performance Control – a system that optimizes the knife-edge agility of the X6 by varying torque delivery between the rear wheels for greater bite under slippery conditions.

The all-mighty X6 M receives many of the same refinements as its stablemates for 2013. Changes unique to this range-topping powerhouse include a new, aluminum “power dome” hood, brake calipers painted “M” blue and now-standard M multi-contour seats. New LED tail lights and optional Full LED Headlights complete the appearance update for the X6 M.

Untouched is the road-scorching 555-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 – a masterpiece sculpted by the high-performance specialists at the renowned BMW M in-house tuning division – and six-speed automatic transmission with Launch Control. Thanks to their deft ministrations, the X6 M blisters pavement as it bolts to 60 mph in a mind bending 4.5 seconds.
