Vehicle Profile: The 2011 Honda Accord

The 2011 Honda Accord is one of the unequivocal kings of the mainstream sedan market. The Accord maintains that status through consistent refinement and build quality that has been setting the benchmark for decades. The attention to detail is evident in the finely trimmed, roomy interior and highly refined powertrains that draw on a long history of Honda motorsports excellence to deliver lively performance and stellar economy.
For 2011, the entire lineup benefits from fuel economy and styling updates. There’s also a new Special Edition trim level that gives buyers another high-value choice.
The Accord has a revised front grille, fascia and trunklid to improve aerodynamics and enhance styling. The grille is bolder, and standard 16-inch wheels give a confident stance. Along with the aerodynamic improvements, Honda has taken measures to reduce friction in the standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder and available 3.5-liter V6. Transmission gear ratios have also been adjusted, and the net result is fuel economy improvements. A four-cylinder Accord sedan with automatic transmission picks up two mpg in the city and three mpg on the highway with figures increasing to 23 and 34 mpg respectively. The four-cylinder teams with a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission with Grade Logic Control to end “gear-hunting when ascending and descending steep terrain.
Choice is a big part of the staying power of the Honda Accord. The sedan and coupe body styles present the Accord excellence in packages that have wide appeal. From families to sporty driving enthusiasts, there’s an Accord for your tastes. The Accord sedan is available in seven trim levels: LX, LX Premium, SE, EX, EX V6, EX-L and EX-L V6. The common thread is a solid Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure with double-wishbone front and independent multi-link rear suspension. Front, side and side-curtain airbags are standard as well, along with Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA™) with Traction Control and front-seat Active Head Restraints.
Honda has enhanced the interior styling of the 2011 Accord, which features new, easier-to-use climate controls located closer to the driver. Models with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ include a rearview camera, and all models are available with new seat fabrics and an updated instrument panel.
The Accord LX (MSRP $21,380) is well equipped even before you select any options. Cabin air filtration for the air conditioning system and steering wheel mounted controls are standard, plus a 160-watt audio system with six speakers, Radio Data System, auxiliary input jack and speed-sensitive volume control. The LX Premium adds an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat, handsome 16-inch alloy wheels, auto up/down front windows with illuminated window switches and a security system. The Accord SE ups the luxury with leather seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The front seats are heated, and the driver’s seat expands its power adjustment range to 10 ways including power lumbar.
The Accord EX packs more power with a 190-hp version of Honda’s smooth, 2.4-liter intelligent Variable Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC®) four-cylinder. A bar across the front strut towers increases the rigidity of the front structure, and 17-inch alloy wheels put more rubber on the road. A one-touch power moonroof is also part of the EX trim, along with automatic headlamps, heated side mirrors, rear-seat vents for the climate system and a six-disc audio system with USB input.
Buyers looking for more power can opt for the EX V6, which carries a 271-hp 3.5-liter i-VTEC® V6 with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) that shuts down cylinders when maximum power isn’t needed to save fuel. Standard foglamps, chrome door handles and dual exhaust also distinguish the EX V6. The most luxurious Accord is the EX-L, which has a leather-trimmed interior, a 270-watt Premium Audio System and heated front seats with a four-way power-adjustable passenger’s seat joining the driver’s 10-way power seat. Dual-zone climate control and Bluetooth® phone integration with steering wheel phone controls are also included. The EX-L trim is also available with the V6.
There are four Accord coupe configurations: LX-S (MSRP $22,980), EX, EX-L and EX-L V6. The 190-hp 2.4-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder is the standard Accord coupe engine, supported by 17-inch alloy wheels for sporty handling. Options and equipment for the Accord coupe trim levels largely mirror sedan offerings with EX models gaining premium interior accents, a Premium Audio System and power moonroof and the leather-lined EX-L upping the luxury. The power hungry will find the EX-L V6 satisfying with its 271-hp engine, paddleshifters for automatic transmission models, 18-inch alloy wheels and rear spoiler added atop the considerable luxury available in the EX-L.
From family-minded to fast-car fan, there’s an Accord that meets those needs. The roomy, practical sedan and rakishly handsome coupe are consistent winners in reliability and quality. Well-equipped from the get-go, every Accord is packed with value from the wheels up as well. Honda fastidiously improves the Accord every year, which keeps it on the cutting edge of style and performance without sacrificing efficiency. No wonder the Accord has been named to the Car and Driver "10Best" list a record 25 times. It’s a hat trick that only the best players can pull off, and Honda has secured its ongoing place in the hall of fame with the Accord.
