Vehicle Profile: The 2012 BMW 1 Series

With a wind-defying silhouette and room for four, impressive power and sport dynamics, and standout fuel economy and premium amenities, the BMW 1 Series is returning the company that founded the compact sports sedan segment nearly 50 years ago, back to its roots.

Sharing strong strands of DNA with the iconic sports sedan that won the 24-Hour endurance race at Germany’s Nürburgring Circuit in 1970, the new 2012 1 Series is a paragon of performance.

The 128i model features a dual overhead cam 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder that puts out 230 hp and 200 lb/ft of torque and comes with a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed STEPTRONIC automatic at no extra cost. And when opening her up at higher speeds, the lower front fascia employs a set of aerodynamic “air curtains,” blocking and redirecting airflow to reduce turbulence in and around the wheel arches. Of course, the M Sport Package is always an available and fitting option for the 128i.

The 135i, wrapped in the track-tuned body kit from the M Sport Package complete with side skirts and front and rear aprons, also comes with a 3.0-liter, but this is an inline-six twin-scroll turbocharger with piezo fuel injection that boosts output to 300 hp and 300 lb/ft that can take you from 0-60 in 5 seconds flat. It also comes in a six-speed manual or an advanced automatic, seven-speed double-clutch transmission (DCT) that lets you shift using the gear selector or paddles mounted on the steering wheel. The 135i also offers an equally impressive fuel economy at 28 highway mpg estimated on the six-speed manual and 25 highway mpg on the DCT.

As far as standard equipment goes, there's nothing standard about the 2012 1 Series. On the outside, all 1 Series model headlights receive new, overarching LED-light strips, while taillights incorporate the familiar “hockey-stick” accents found throughout the rest of the BMW family. New palettes of Vermillion Red Metallic and Marrakesh Brown Metallic join the family of exterior colors, while new Alpine White interior trim becomes available as a no-cost option. Oyster Boston Leather replaces last year’s Lemon Boston Leather and supple leatherette upholstery remains standard throughout the lineup. Eight-way power front seats with four-way power lumbar support are also standard equipment on the 135i Coupe and 135i Convertible.

Hands-free Bluetooth connectivity also joins the slate of standard features on all models, as does an iPod/USB adapter, automatic climate control, HD Radio, cruise control and a three-spoke leather-wrapped multi-function sport steering wheel. And buyers who enjoy a weekend getaway to the slopes will appreciate the now-standard “Through-Load” system with integrated transport bag for skis.

Also available as standalone items or as part of various packages, optional equipment includes heat for the steering wheel and front seats, a Navigation System with iDrive and Real Time Traffic, a 300-watt, 10-speaker Harman/Kardon surround sound audio system and SIRIUS Satellite Radio with a free one-year subscription.

Offered in four versions – 128i Coupe (MSRP $31,200), 128i Convertible (MSRP $36,900), the 135i Coupe (MSRP $39,300) and 135i Convertible (MSRP $44,100) – the new 2012 1 Series remains true to the BMW aesthetic of premium performance and luxury no matter the segment.
