Vehicle Profile: BMW M Overview

BMW 1 Series M Coupe
 
Don’t let its size fool you. The smallest M vehicle is also one of the most impressive. The 1 Series M takes elevates the 1 Series to a new level of excellence. Under the hood sits an M-tuned version of the direct-injected BMW TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine which generates 335 hp and 332 lb/ft of torque. The power is directed to the rear wheels through a standard six-speed manual transmission.
 
The wide-track M Chassis has been tuned on Germany’s famed Nürburgring track to deliver optimum handling in high-performance driving scenarios. The wheels have been designed to help provide the best cooling for the M Compound Braking System, which delivers excellent stopping power with minimal fade. Cornering is aided by Variable M Differential Lock, which maintains proper traction for both rear wheels, even as the car is being pushed to its limits. And, by pressing the M Drive Button in the car, drivers can turn off the Dynamic Stability Control System for an even sportier drive.
 
BMW M3
 
The BMW M3 was the original M vehicle, and now, several generations later, it remains a true performance icon. Offered as a Coupe, Sedan or retractable-hardtop Convertible, the M3 is powered by a high-revving V8 engine generating 414 hp and a 0-60 time as low as 4.5 seconds. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard, augmented with an oil cooler and heavy-duty clutch; a seven-speed dual-clutch automated gearbox is also available. Naturally, an M-tuned suspension helps deliver road and track dynamics that are unparalleled, and M Differential Lock helps maximize traction – important with so much power being channeled to the rear wheels.
 
BMW X6 M
 
The unique, four-passenger Sport Activity Coupe already had exceptional style and a aggressive street presence. The mighty BMW X6 M takes it to the extreme with wide fender flares, giant 20-inch wheels and high-performance tires. Pop the hood and you’ll discover an M-tuned 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 delivering an intense, lag-free 555 hp and 500 lb/ft of torque capable of a 0-60 time in just 4.5 seconds. A sport-tuned chassis, upgraded brakes and six-speed automatic are all standard, as is the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system.
 
BMW X5 M
 
If you're looking for performance balanced with practicality, the choice for you is the BMW X5 M. With a muscular new body, seating for five and up to 75.2 cubic feet of cargo space, the X5 M is just as capable of hauling people as cargo. It features xDrive all-wheel drive and is powered by the same 555-hp V8 as the X6 M. The X5 M also races to 60 mph from a standstill in just 4.5 seconds.
 
BMW M5
 
The newest member of the M family is the 2012 BMW M5 sedan. It has the same 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 featured in the X5 M and X6 M models, only BMW’s super-sedan jacks output up to 560 hp. It also churns out 500 lb/ft of torque and is expected to have a 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds or better. Directing that power to the back wheels (19-inchers are standard) is a seven-speed dual-clutch automated transmission. As with every M vehicle, the Motorsport Division has tuned the chassis and braking systems to squeeze out the best performance possible, and an M Drive mode lets drivers unleash the car’s full power with minimal interference from the standard Dynamic Stability Control System.
