Vehicle Profile: The 2012 GMC Terrain

The 2012 GMC Terrain is a perfect family choice with its blend of SUV capability, the best all-wheel and front-wheel drive highway fuel economy in its segment and an easy-driving demeanor. For 2012, GMC has added even more features and functionality.

The five-passenger 2012 GMC Terrain (MSRP starting at $25,480) offers SLE and SLT trims, in front- or all-wheel drive configuration. A front-wheel drive Terrain SLE is more fully equipped than even luxury cars were just a few short years ago. The standard Color Touch Radio with seven-inch touchscreen display and steering wheel controls, standard Bluetooth® connectivity and Rear Vision Camera weren’t even imagined back then, and the standard power windows, heated outside mirrors, air conditioning, cruise control, keyless entry and six-speaker CD audio system would have been expensive optional equipment.

Advanced noise control features in the Terrain result in a luxuriously quiet ride. An acoustically optimized, “laid back” windshield angle and extremely tight construction tolerances drastically reduce exterior noise and air leaks. Triple door seals, plus laminated windshield and front-side glass, also contribute to the premium environment inside. In four-cylinder models, Active Noise Cancellation employs sound waves to further reduce cabin noise, and reduces engine rpm at idle to maximize fuel economy.

Hands-free voice control in the Terrain is enhanced for 2012 and features technology developed by Nuance®, a leader in the voice-recognition field. Pandora® Internet Radio and Stitcher® Smart Radio services can be beamed through the audio system through a smartphone, as part of the enhanced functionality that optional GMC IntelliLink brings to help keep driver’s hands on the wheel while also making the accessories even easier to control.

The MultiFlex rear seating system in the Terrain includes a 60/40-split/folding second row that slides almost eight inches forward and back. With a best in class 39.9 inches of rear legroom, and 31.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats, you’ll have room for all the people and cargo you need to haul.

The Terrain SLE-2 trim features a premium eight-speaker audio system from Pioneer®, automatic climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Optional gear like heated seats, remote start, a power moonroof and a Cargo Package make the Terrain even more comfortable and accommodating. Exterior touches available for SLE-2 models are 18- and 19-inch wheels with machined aluminum or chrome-clad finishes, as well as a dealer-installed Chrome Package that brightens up door handles and exterior mirrors.

The Terrain SLT-1 adds heated front seats and remote start as standard features. The SLT-2 includes a power sunroof, Chrome Exterior Appearance Package and a programmable power liftgate with electronic obstacle detection in its standard fitment. You can program the height the hatch opens to, to avoid crashing it into overhead obstructions and make it easier to reach.

Two powertrain choices are available, and both are E85 FlexFuel capable. The 2012 Terrain features an advanced, 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) as standard. This modern, direct-injected powerplant makes 182 hp and 172 lb/ft of torque while also providing the best highway fuel economy in its segment – 32 mpg in front-wheel drive configuration. That equals a 600-plus-mile highway cruising range. The four-cylinder also delivers best-in-class AWD highway fuel economy of 29 mpg. A standard six-speed automatic transmission with overdrive backs up the light-sipping engine with smooth shifts, and it features an “ECO” mode that changes shift points for even better fuel economy.

A 3.0-liter VVT V6 with direct injection and 264 hp is also available for buyers seeking extra muscle. Equipped with the V6, the Terrain offers an unsurpassed-in-its-class 3,500-pound towing capacity. Automatic Grade Braking and Hill-Start Assist work with the available Trailering Package to make towing effortless.

Safety is looked after by standard StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control, and available Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning. Available Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist can detect smaller objects behind you up to eight feet away. Standard airbags include advanced front, thorax, curtain and seat-mounted side-impact units. Standard OnStar technology includes driver assistance features like hands-free calling, vehicle diagnostics and a six-month free trial of the Directions and Connections plan, plus the security of emergency support and the Advanced Crash Response System, which automatically alerts authorities to a moderate-to-severe crash.

With a design that’s crisp and refined, the GMC Terrain is a distinctive vehicle. The Terrain’s flexible capacity and thoughtful list of standard features help it serve families with distinction, too.
