Vehicle Profile: The 2011 Audi A6 Overview

Class. Quality. Refinement. These are hallmarks of the 2011 Audi A6, which can be configured to fit the needs of just about any luxury sedan buyer. From V6 power and front-wheel drive, to muscular V10 performance and all-wheel drive, to an engagingly sporty and practical wagon, the Audi A6 family is an inherently appealing and feature-laden choice.

The model range begins with the Audi A6 3.2 (available in Premium and Premium Plus trims) at an MSRP of $45,200. This front-wheel drive sedan produces 265 hp, 243 lb/ft of torque and fuel economy EPA-estimated at 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway from its 3.2-liter Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI®) V6, which is paired with Audi’s Multitronic® continuously variable transmission. Next in line is the 2011 Audi A6 3.0T sedan (available in Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige trims), which employs Audi’s signature quattro® all-wheel drive system, a 300-hp 3.0-liter TFSI® supercharged V6 (named one of Ward’s 10 Best Engines for 2010) and a six-speed Tiptronic® automatic transmission.

The 350-hp Audi A6 4.2 (available in Prestige) gets its power from a 4.2-liter FSI V8, also packaged with the six-speed Tiptronic and quattro. The ultimate sedan in the A6 lineup is the 2011 Audi S6, whose six-speed Tiptronic channels 435 hp to the quattro AWD system via a 5.2-liter FSI V10 engine borrowed from corporate cousin Lamborghini.

There’s one more sibling in the family, too. The 2011 Audi A6 Avant wagon is available exclusively with the 3.0T drivetrain (including quattro and the six-speed Tiptronic), and offers 33.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the backseats. Fold those, and you open up 63.8 cubic feet of available space combined with the performance offered by the A6 3.0T four-door sedan.

Every A6 model and trim level offers an attractive array of standard features and available options. The A6’s elegant, upscale interior is outfitted with standard leather seating surfaces and walnut trim inlays. A6 3.0T and 4.2 models get Audi’s multilevel front seat heaters, which heats the entire seat surface; 3.2 models can get them as part of the available Cold Weather Package, which also adds multilevel rear seat heaters on all trims, as well as a heated steering wheel with paddle shifters on Prestige trims and models with the available Sport Package.

There’s more: Every Audi A6 model is equipped with “MMI® Navigation plus,” which combines the latest version of Audi’s intuitive Multi Media Interface (MMI) operating system and controller with a seven-inch color LCD display featuring NVIDIA® graphics and a 40GB hard drive-based 3D navigation system with real-time traffic data. Furthermore, the system offers voice commands for both navigation and telephone controls. Bluetooth connectivity is also standard in the A6. Both SIRIUS Satellite Radio and pristine-sounding HD Radio reception are included with MMI Navigation plus.

Rather listen to your own music? No problem. The 2011 A6 range features the Audi Music Interface as standard equipment. Not only can you play back MP3 files stored on a USB drive or listen to any portable media player through the standard auxiliary jack, the Audi Music Interface lets drivers connect an Apple iPod® and then control all the device’s features via the MMI user interface. Standard on the A6 Prestige trims and the S6 high-performance model is a 13-speaker BOSE surround-sound system with AudioPilot® noise compensation technology. AudioPilot factors in the amount of road noise present in the cabin and adjusts the audio system’s volume accordingly. Prestige trims also come standard with Audi advanced key, which includes keyless vehicle unlocking and push button ignition.

Safety features are plentiful. In addition to standard front, front side and Sideguard® head-curtain airbags front and rear, optional rear-side airbags are available. A6 models also feature antilock brakes, Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution and Brake Assist, which automatically senses emergency stops and increases braking power accordingly. Electronic Stabilization Program is standard across the range, and Audi side assist blind spot detection is available as optional equipment in 3.0T and 4.2T Prestige trims, and the S6. Naturally, quattro AWD-equipped models add an extra measure of confidence-inspiring all-weather capability.

The Audi S6 has its own sport suspension. To add more performance-focused athleticism to the A6’s already engaging demeanor, owners can select either an 18” Sport Package or a 19” Sport Package. Both include more assertive suspension tuning and a multi-function steering wheel with shift paddles. The 18” Sport Package adds 18-inch wheels with all-season performance tires while the 19” Sport Package goes with 19-inchers shod in summer performance rubber instead.

Finally, drivers seeking true uniqueness can tailor their cars via the “Audi exclusive” Program, a vehicle personalization program that offers a number of exterior colors and interior options that go well beyond what’s available via normal standard and available features.

The A6 represents the crossroads of elegance and excellence. Regardless of which 2011 Audi A6 you select – A6 sedan, family-friendly Avant wagon or fire-breathing S6 high-performance sedan – you’ll drive home in a car that blends timeless elegance with the very latest powertrain, safety and entertainment technology.
