Hyundai Leads the Way in Fuel Efficiency

With 2012 well underway, most auto manufacturers are making resolutions to improve the fuel efficiency of their cars. Hyundai, however, is already ahead of the rest.

Last year, John Krafcik, Hyundai Motor America President and CEO, assured drivers that Hyundai was keeping its word regarding a recent promise. “In 2008, Hyundai had committed to achieve a CAFE level of at least 35 mpg by 2015. Since then, we’ve redoubled our efforts to introduce affordable fuel-efficient technology across our lineup, and now we can confidently project achieving a 35 mpg average several years early.”

Now, a year later, Hyundai has made good on Krafcik’s word.

Hyundai has met the federal government’s Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard four years ahead of the deadline, achieving a 36 mpg average across its model lineup. The government is requiring all automakers to achieve at least 35.5 mpg by 2016.

Hyundai took care of business by offering four cars capable of delivering highway fuel efficiency of 40 mpg or better: The Hyundai Accent, Elantra, Veloster and Sonata Hybrid.

While industry rivals are still working on reaching the 35.5 mark, Hyundai is now able to focus on the government’s latest CAFE requirement: Automakers must raise the average fuel economy of their products to 54.5 mpg by 2025. Many companies have spoken out against the recent mandate, calling it unrealistic. Krafcik, however, feels differently. “With 2025 CAFE targets being discussed in the 47-to-62 mpg range, Hyundai’s fuel economy and sales achievements across a wide range of vehicle segments may provide some confidence to policymakers that this industry can achieve remarkable fuel efficiency gains without compromising vehicle sales, appeal, value or customer satisfaction.”
