Developing a BizTalk Cloud Strategy
by Shashi Raina - EDI Specialists Practice Manager, Microsoft Technologies

It does look like that cloud is not a passing fad like SOA. Conceptually SOA was an excellent strategy but while implementing it, the most well drawn plans would run into roadblocks. These roadblocks were not just technical but a lot of them were cultural and political. It was even harder to show dollar benefits of a SOA implementation. Cloud benefits, on the other hand, are very tangible and easier to calculate. It is not very hard to calculate cost of creating and maintaining server farms within a corporation.

EDI Academy
IT Operations and EDI
by Michael Kotoyan - EDI Academy

The following is an extract from the EDI Fundamentals & Best Practices training course offered by The EDI Academy (http://ediacademy.com/). This small extract is just one element of the whole course and should not be considered as an EDI tutorial. This article attempts to describe the challenges a lot of corporate IT departments face when bringing in EDI support into the IT operations team.

Making your carbon-less footprint in the EDI world
by Jessica Pagano, Sales & Marketing Analyst

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), e-Invoicing, VANs, going paperless...chances are, if you aren’t already implementing some facet of EDI, you’re at least familiar with it. So where is your place in the cloud? First, a little EDI 101: EDI became popular in the mid-1990’s. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, EDI is, “the computer-to-computer interchange of strictly formatted messages that represent documents other than monetary instruments.” So what does that mean exactly? It’s the automated translation and transmission of structured data from one business to another. Most popular belief is that EDI is intended for larger firms, but with today’s technologies, that’s not the case. B2BGateway, for instance, offers a fully-integrated solution, WebConnect 2.0, where setup time takes only a day and costs as little as $39 per month. That’s one option, but depending on your document flow, the opportunities are endless.

Items of Interest, RFID now!
by Zander Livingston - True Count

Beginning in 2004, one of the world’s most formidable retail giants, Wal-Mart began mandating that suppliers comply with RFID tagging. With 3,750 stores, Wal-Mart tends to be the pace-setter for the retail industry. Their large scale implementation of RFID is helping to drive widespread adoption of the technology by other category leaders, including Macy’s, Bloomindales and J.C. Penny. At the same time, the cost of RFID tags continues to drop, coming down to about 15 cents or less per tag, depending on volume. Converging with these factors, on October 1st of this year, the Department of Defense/Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) issued a mandate stating all DLA suppliers must include RFID tags on all items destined for their 25 supply depots, driving demand for RFID across more business verticals.

Looking for Data in all the Right Places
by David Matsil, Enhanced Retail Solutions

The vast majority of larger retailers offer a point of sales EDI document (852).

While these documents are rich in detailed data, many manufacturers have attempted to process 852 data and either failed or quickly found it to be a significant drain of resources - both money and time. That’s because translating EDI (and other documents required in the process) involves scrubbing, synthesizing and applying business rules, formulas and algorithms, error checking and validation.

So we thought we’d take on a timely topic for this newsletter: alternatives to EDI 852 for capturing Point of Sale data.

5 Essential Elements of Secure Internet File Transfer
by Sam Morris, Attachmate Corporation

Data worth protecting within the corporate network is also worth protecting as it moves across the Internet to transfer partners. Transferring files over the Internet is routine. What may not be routine is the secure transfer of files over the Internet. All too often, sensitive or proprietary data travels across the Internet over security-weak protocols, or as unprotected email attachments.
