Welcome Member
Chairman Message
by John N. Perkins, CPA

Part of being the Best of the Best of the statewide TSCPA chapters means providing opportunities for our membership to enjoy the highest quality, up-to-the-minute education at a cost that makes it accessible to everyone.  Free to nearly-free Continuing Professional Education has been a commitment the Dallas CPA Society has made to its constituents throughout its existence.  One of our top member benefits is the 20 hours of low-cost CPE that we offer every year.
This year is off to a great start for the DCPAS’s  education program.  Our very popular four-hour Member Appreciation CPE Series events have been scheduled for October 28th and December 10th of 2013, and February 11, 2014.  The cost for these events is a nominal $25, an extraordinary value when you see the terrific lineup of experts we’ve assembled for each of these events.  Just a few among the many topics to be covered are estate planning issues, taxpayer perspective in dealing with the IRS, the appeals process and employee benefits.

Chair,  2013-14

Partnership/LLC Tax Issues & Update - September 19 & 20, 2013

Flash Alert.  Hot Issues of 2013.  Recent Developments.  Steve will expand his discussion of the self-employment tax.  He will explain what you need to know about how partnerships and LLCs are affected by the new Medicare contribution tax.  He will update you on how the tax reform discussion would affect pass-through entities.  Each of these issues are significant by themselves.  Together, they could affect your client's choice of entity.  Get up-to-date information; sign-up now.
This course will bring you up-to-date on the important tax issues affecting your clients operating as partnerships and limited liability companies.  Partnership and LLC taxation can be complicated.  Congress, by enacting stiffer tax return preparer penalty rules has said, in essence, that you must be a knowledgeable tax preparer of these returns.  Your instructor will address the important tax issues of contributed property and maintaining capital accounts; special allocations and substantial economic effect; the importance of the qualified income offset to members of LLCs; the tax definition of recourse and non-recourse debt, and how it is allocated and reported on the K-1; what you must know about how the at-risk rules apply to LLCs; whether your LLC is a tax shelter; the importance of the Texas LLC statute; and much more!  While there are no prerequisites, parts of the course will seem basic, intermediate, or advanced, depending on your familiarity in the area.  As a participant, you will receive an excellent resource, Practical Guide to Partnerships and LLCs, a 531-page fifth edition textbook published by CCH, Inc.  The textbook is comprehensive, clearly written and provides practical guidance on this complex subject.  Your instructor says this is his "go to" book on partnership/LLC tax issues and, by itself, is worth the price of admission.  Your instructor, Steven J. Tillinger, CPA, receives excellent evaluations in this course.  He is known for making tax interesting and making highly technical material understandable.  Sign up now for this highly-rated, popular course.

Dallas Margarita Ball - Volunteer Now

For 37 years, The Dallas Margarita Society has been blessed by great supporters, highest among them being the hundreds of volunteers who have donated their time at our events throughout the years. Support from volunteers is critical to the success of their efforts in reaching out to children in need throughout the Metroplex.

The Society is currently focused on the 37th Annual Dallas Margarita Ball on November 23, 2013, their largest volunteer opportunity of the year. If you’ve been, you already know about the world’s biggest, invitation-only, charity black tie, and you also know about the thousands of Christmas toys collected at the Ball for regional kids in need. If you’ve never been, volunteering is a great way to check out what the Margarita Society is all about.

We are accepting registrations now from those wanting to donate their time to this worthy cause.  Please note that, as a volunteer on behalf of the Dallas CPA Society, you will specifically be assisting with the collection of donations during your shift(s).

If you’re interested in offering your time to the 37th Annual Dallas Margarita Ball, contact Caitlin Overton at, or by phone at 972-960-8311.
