Vehicle Profile: 2013 LINCOLN MKS

A new era in luxury cars

The flagship LINCOLN MKS luxury sport sedan exemplifies Lincoln’s commitment to breathtaking style, powerful and fuel-efficient drivetrains and unparalleled in-car technology. The 2013 model year brings significant enhancements for the LINCOLN MKS, including more powerful engines, improved fuel economy and larger brakes. A new grille, hood, front fenders and fascia are joined by new 19-and 20-inch wheels and new exterior colors. Inside you’ll find improved sound insulation and a newly crafted interior.

LINCOLN MKS drivers have a choice of two V6 engines. The standard 3.7-liter V6 features Twin independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) and delivers 304 hp (up from 274 hp in 2012) and 279 lb/ft of torque (up from 2012’s 270 lb/ft). A superb 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6 is also available. It produces 365 hp (up from 355 last year) and 350 lb/ft of torque.

The twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engine delivers the muscle of a high-performance V8, yet returns mileage you can’t get from any V8: an EPA-estimated 25 mpg highway. With 30 more hp that last year, the 3.7-liter V6 is more efficient still, delivering an estimated 27 mpg highway with front-wheel drive, a two mpg improvement over last year, and 26 mpg highway with all-wheel drive. All LINCOLN MKS EcoBoost models are standard with all-wheel drive, and every LINCOLN MKS, regardless of engine selection, incorporates a modern six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission with steering wheel paddle shifters that allow the driver to use the six-speed like a stick-shift.

In addition to its modern powertrains, the LINCOLN MKS incorporates segment-exclusive Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD). The dampers on the 2013 LINCOLN MKS offer a much greater range of control; the car monitors real-time data about road conditions, calculates the optimum damping level 500 times every second and executes damping force changes 20 times every second. As a result, the LINCOLN MKS delivers ride quality that is completely unparalleled. CCD is so fast and so effective that an input that’s received at the car’s front wheels is instantly used to calculate the optimal rear-wheel suspension settings based on what the front has just experienced.

Lincoln Drive Control is a revolutionary system that enables drivers to tailor the relationship between the suspension, steering, engine and gearbox to suit their driving needs. The basic “Drive” mode provides balances comfort and handling in a matter that’s excellent for regular daily driving. “Sport” mode makes a variety of changes to deliver a more involved behind-the-wheel experience. In “Sport” mode, the CCD system switches to a firmer setting that puts a focus on handling, the car’s electric power steering settings are revamped to require more effort and deliver more road feel, the engine management programming is recalibrated for faster response and the six-speed automatic transmission programming downshifts more aggressively, holds gears longer in curves and upshifts at higher rpm levels.

Unique exterior styling delivers unmatched street presence and curb appeal, and the powertrains in the LINCOLN MKS ensure a spirited, engaging drive. The “wow” factor is elevated further when you settle into the cabin, which is outfitted with cutting-edge user interfaces and in-vehicle technology. Drivers get the improved SYNC® system, with easy-to-use voice commands and a simplified onscreen user interface, plus free SYNC Services Operator Assist, which connects a driver with a live operator for directions and other services. Furthermore SYNC uses a driver’s smartphone data connection to convert the car into a Wi-Fi hotspot, so that other occupants can share the Internet connection on their phones, tablets or laptops computers. The MyLincoln Touch control interface incorporates capacitive touch surfaces for all the interior car controls and allows for an even sleeker, more sweeping interior style. In addition, the system outfits the instrument cluster with a pair of fully reconfigurable LCD displays that the driver can set to present a variety of different information. That’s in addition to the large, full-color eight-inch central display that’s placed in easy view on the dashboard.

Infotainment options are extensive, including a standard 210-watt, 10-speaker audio system and an available THX II Certified Car Audio System with 16 speakers, including a 10-inch subwoofer, and digital signal processing. HD Radio and SiriusXM Satellite Radio are included. Also offered is an SD-card-based navigation system with voice controls, courtesy of SYNC and SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link services.

Driver aids like Active Park Assist, which allows the LINCOLN MKS to parallel-park itself with little human intervention, a Blind Spot Information System, Collision Warning, and Adaptive Cruise Control, are also available. The MyKey system gives drivers the ability to pre-program settings that will limit top speed to 80 mph, prohibit the deactivation of the Traction Control System, limit maximum audio volume, and enable audible speed alerts at 45, 55, or 65 mph. This technology is useful when someone other than the primary driver, such as a younger, new driver, is operating the car.

Available luxury and convenience features also include a retractable rear sunshade, multi-contour front seats, a heated steering wheel, high-end Bridge of Weir leather seating surfaces and a selection of matched woods. Further adding to the feeling of personalization and exclusivity, no two cars fitted with the available natural wood trim will ever have the same grain pattern to them.

In addition to all the available driver aids and technology, every LINCOLN MKS boasts a comprehensive suite of safety features, from its Safety Canopy® System of airbags, to available Lane Keeping System, to Traction and Electronic Stability Control systems.

The 2013 LINCOLN MKS rises to the top of its segment thanks to its visually arresting style, outstanding all-around performance and peerless suite of technology offerings. It’s a smart pick for the discerning driver.
