LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Thornton Oil Corp. has purchased Burwell Oil Service, Lincoln, Ill. The deal calls for a mid-February closing, the companies say.
Burwell Oil Service was founded by Gene Burwell in 1958 as a Phillips-branded marketer. It expanded into the convenience store business in the 1980s and is now a private-brand retailer, marketing under the GB Oil brand. The company operates 21 c-stores, one travel plaza and nine car washes.
Thornton Oil in a leading independent private-brand chain retailer, marketing under the Thornton’s brand. With the acquisition of Burwell Oil Service, Thornton Oil will operate 158 gasoline/c-stores and one travel plaza. It also distributes petroleum products through the wholly owned Thornton Transportation Co. and operates a river bulk terminal in its headquarters city of Louisville, Ky.
