Cuts five deals in five months

SAN ANTONIO -- Ultramar Diamond Shamrock Corp. last week announced the completion of five separate deals in which it acquired 22 retail outlets over the past several months. Terms of the deals were undisclosed.

In August, UDS purchased a 3,000-sq.-ft.-store site from Trejo Oil of Mesa, Ariz. The single site, which was branded Arco, also has a cobranding agreement with McDonald’s. The company also bought three stores in the growing Phoenix, Ariz., market from Giant Industries.

An additional 10 stores in Lubbock, Texas, were purchased from Equilon Enterprises LLC in November 2001. The stores, branded Texaco, are located on prime sections of real estate and include car washes. Additionally, the company purchased another three outlets in Lubbock from McClain Oil.

It also purchased of five Racetrac retail outlets in San Antonio that month, ending Racetrac’s presence in the San Antonio market.

“Each of the sites we are acquiring are modern, attractive and complement our existing network of stores,” said Steve Motz, UDS’ senior vice president, marketing operations. “The outlets will fit nicely into our retail growth strategy in key markets served from our core refining operations,” he said.

UDS currently owns and operates 1,500 stores in the Midcontinent region and has another 3,500 dealer sites in the network. The newly acquired retail outlets are currently being converted to Diamond Shamrock Corner Stores, and the company anticipates a total reimage by yearend.

“These acquisitions will further enhance our ability to market our products and services in a convenient and competitive fashion. Purchasing these sites will have a positive impact on the communities we serve,” Motz said.
