Vehicle Profile: The 2012 MAZDA3 SKYACTIV 5-Door
Mazda pushes the limit with SKYACTIV technology.

SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY is more than an engine, it is an engineering principle: Enhance performance and fuel economy through lightweight materials and efficient design. The first car in America to receive this incredible technology is none other than the best-selling MAZDA3. In its most practical five-door form, the MAZDA3 is a spacious comfortable vehicle that can fit any need.

The SKYACTIV-G engine that powers the MAZDA3 (starting at an MSRP of $19,300) produces 155 hp and 148 lb/ft of torque. It provides an entertaining driving experience while still returning great fuel economy.

What makes SKYACTIV different from the competition? Mazda SKYACTIV engineers have invested time extracting the limits of power from the smallest possible displacement. By reducing the weight of the engine components and increasing the compression ratio, Mazda has developed a world-beating engine that is extremely efficient. The SKYACTIV-G engine is so impressive, it actually set a new world record for highest compression ratio of any mass produced gasoline automobile engine.

SKYACTIV engineering has also been applied to the transmissions. The SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission and the SKYACTIV-Drive automatic are both six-speed gearboxes that have been redesigned from the ground up. The new transmissions are lighter and more compact than the models they replace, and they are built with many new and unique engineering designs that demonstrate the Mazda ability for innovation. For owners who opt for the manual transmission, Mazda has gone to great lengths to ensure that the crisp shift-feel a Mazda manual is known for has remained throughout the redesign.

The outcome of all this new technology is an EPA-estimated 39 mpg highway for 5-Door models with the automatic transmission. In addition to boosted fuel economy, another side effect of all the weight-saving technology is found in the dynamics of the car. With less weight, the MAZDA3 handles with a precision and feel that none of its competitors in the compact segment can match. The five-door design of the MAZDA3 also eliminates the space sacrifices many competitors have had to make to reach lofty fuel economy goals. The 95 cubic feet of passenger space in the MAZDA3 5-Door is more than the 91 cubic feet available in the five-door Ford Focus, and the larger fuel tank in the MAZDA3 (14.5 gallons versus 12.4 gallons) means fewer stops at the pump.

To make sure your loved ones are protected, the MAZDA3 comes equipped with an arsenal of active and passive safety features, which includes six airbags, Triple-H body construction, anti-lock brakes, Dynamic Stability Control, Traction Control System and much more. All Mazda vehicles also come with the Mazda Certified Roadside Assistance Program for that extra security.

Buyers of the MAZDA3 5-Door i Touring begin with keyless entry, Bluetooth® connectivity, 16-inch alloy wheels, the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual transmission and the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as standard. The SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission is available for buyers if they prefer. Opting for the i Grand Touring model brings the automatic transmission as standard and a host of interior enhancements. The seats gain leather trim, heaters (front seats only) and eight-way power operation (driver’s seat). A power sliding glass moonroof, 10-speaker Bose® Centerpoint® stereo system and compact navigation system are also standard equipment on the i Grand Touring model.

Mazda designs vehicles for drivers who enjoy the dynamic feel of a well-built and sporty automobile, and the new MAZDA3 is no exception. With impressive fuel economy, a budget-friendly price and an unmatched sporty character, the MAZDA3 is miles above the competition.
