Custom auto shops forced to reinvent themselves

For nearly two decades, the largest part of Valley Van & Sport Utilities' business has been customizing vehicles - making high-end modifications, like installing plush interiors with LCD televisions, pulsating surround-sound audio systems and sets of glossy chrome wheels with road-grabbing tires, Newsday reports. The Valley Stream shop still does such specialty work. But because of the sagging economy many such vehicle-accessory businesses on Long Island have been forced to reinvent themselves. "It's all about adaptability," said Larry Ruocchio, 57, owner of Larry's Automotive in New Hyde Park, a custom restoration shop that recently has taken on more common tasks, like basic repair, maintenance and collision. "Life, like business, is that way. You recognize a need to change and then do it to stay in business."

Insignia Group, LC, the largest provider of accessories sales systems, announced a new "domestic auto dealer stimulus plan" that will see the company provide its accessories sales system free to all non-current domestic auto dealer customers (GM, Ford, and Chrysler) now through the end of the year.

CARQUEST cites Missouri technician

Bruce Schuetz of Len's Auto Repair in Overland, Missouri has been named the TECH-NET Professional Auto Service / ASE Master Automotive Technician of the Year for 2008, it was announced today. He was selected for the award after meeting the criteria set by CARQUEST. Schuetz has been an ASE Master Technician for 30 years and Ford factory trained technician for 20 years. For the past two years he has been employed by Len's Auto Repair.
