Executive Perspective – Why You Need to Know About JDBC 4.0
John Goodson, VP & GM of DataDirect Technologies Shares His Thoughts
For more than 10 years, John Goodson has worked closely with Sun and Microsoft on the development and evolution of database connectivity standards including J2EE, JDBC, .NET, ODBC, and ADO. His active memberships in various standards committees, including the JDBC Expert Group, have helped Goodson's team develop the most technically advanced data connectivity technologies.
Why should you care about JDBC 4.0?
If the performance of your Java applications is a concern, or if your applications need to work with XML data, or you simply want to make your life easier, then you’ll want to know about the important new features in JDBC 4.0—and of course use a driver that fully complies with the specification.
In short, JDBC 4.0 represents a significant advance in the standard, containing many important new features such as improved XML support for databases, more control over connection and statement pooling for high-end application performance and scalability, and many features that make it easier for developers to write JDBC applications, including far more efficient debugging of SQLExceptions.
These features are described in more detail in the full article, along with links for downloading the specification and more. Full Story.

Upcoming Webinar: Bridging the Gap between EDI, Proprietary Formats and XML
Mark Your Calendar! Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 11 AM EST – Register Now –
Dr. Carlo Innocenti explores how to bridge the gap between EDI, proprietary formats, and XML. This webinar covers:
- Extracting data from EDI and proprietary files
Manipulate an EDI file or proprietary files as simple XML documents, and extract information from them
- Aggregating EDI messages and different data sources
Merge incoming EDI messages with a variety of different data sources (relational databases, XML files, Web services), and generate a document consistent with a predefined XML Schema
- Create EDI messages using data from different data sources
Extract data from a variety of data sources (relational databases, XML files, Web services), and generate an EDI document consistent with a specific version/sub-version of the EDI specifications you need to use
- Convert an EDI message in a different flat file format and vice-versa
Process an incoming EDI message and send a Comma Separated Value format to your business partner. Receive a fixed-width proprietary format and send an EDI message back

Data Services World Keynote Presentation: View the Video Now
Did you miss Data Services World in June? We don't want you to miss out.
Watch John Goodson's keynote, "Frontiers in Data Access: The Coming Wave in Data Services
John Goodson, VP and General Manager of DataDirect Technologies delivered this keynote address at the first ever Data Services World in June in New York City (co-located with SOA World). Here's a descripton of the presentation:
As SOA rapidly becomes the standard for enterprise architectures, the need for robust technologies for data access and data integration has become more critical than ever before. Due to the vital role that data plays both in business and systems operations, database architectures, information specialists, data integration experts, and anyone responsible for data persistence in an organization are increasingly being called upon to contribute to their organization’s SOA initiatives — whether or not this was intended at the onset. In this presentation, we will review the technologies, best practices, and patterns that are shaping the way we utilize enterprise data.
Watch the video now.
P.S. Want to be data services savvy? Be sure to register for the next Data Services World, sponsored by DataDirect Technologies and co-located with SOA World West 2008, November 19-21 in San Jose, CA.
