Vehicle Overview: 2011 BMW X5
A standout with a category all its own.

BMW's X5 continues to blaze its own path among premium utility vehicles. It's unlike everything on the road, with its blend of performance and utility, so BMW calls the X5 a Sports Activity Vehicle, or SAV. X5 drivers and four passengers, plus their gear, are whisked along by world-class turbocharged powertrains that apportion torque through a fast-acting Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, enhancing driving performance on all surfaces.
There are five X5 models: the X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive35i Premium, X5 xDrive35i Sport Activity, X5 xDrive35d and X5 xDrive50i. The three X5 xDrive35i models and the X5 xDrive50i use turbocharged gasoline engines. The X5 xDrive35d uses a 265-hp turbocharged inline six-cylinder Advanced Diesel engine that produces 425 lb/ft of torque and up to 26 mpg highway. Carrying BMW’s famous turbocharged inline six-cylinder, the X5 xDrive35i features 300 hp and 300 lb/ft of torque. Strong and silky, the 3.0-liter engine squeezes its muscle through BMW’s new eight-speed STEPTRONIC automatic transmission with Adaptive Transmission Control and a Sport shift mode. The X5 xDrive50i uses a 400-hp 4.4-liter V8 with TwinPower turbocharging for plenty of performance, together with the eight-speed STEPTRONIC automatic.
All X5s benefit from BMW EfficientDynamics, a holistic approach that looks at the entire vehicle as an opportunity for energy savings. Lightweight materials, brake regeneration and precise engine management are ways BMW makes thrilling vehicles that also do their best to extract the most energy from every drop of fuel. The X5 xDrive35i returns up to 23 mpg highway, solid numbers for a high-performance utility vehicle that can carry 75.2 cubic feet of cargo.
BMW's performance car ancestry shows through in the X5, too. Available Active Steering adjusts the steering ratio and force depending on conditions, so that handling is always precise.  Standard Hill Descent Control is a nod to the ability of the X5 to tread off pavement, and the system keeps the speed constant while tip-toeing down steep grades by using the braking system to avoid coasting out of control. Safety is watched over by Dynamic Stability Control and front, side and side-impact airbags with a front- and rear-compartment Head Protection System and active head restraints. Innovative Adaptive Brake Lights glow bigger and brighter the harder the driver steps on the brakes, as a way to signal following motorists of trouble ahead.
The X5 xDrive35i offers ten paint colors and black or beige leatherette upholstery swathing the exceptionally comfortable seats.  Deep Sea Blue, Platinum Grey and Sparking Bronze are new paint colors for 2011. New 20-inch alloy wheels with staggered tire sizes enhance both performance and appearance for 2011. Exterior door handles now include vanity lighting when the X5 is equipped with the optional Comfort Access System. When Comfort Access senses the vehicle’s key fob, it automatically lights the surroundings and enabling automatic door unlocking and keyless ignition.
An M Sport Package is also available for X5 xDrive35i Sport Activity buyers, which dresses up the exterior with M-division parts painted in the same color as the body. Double-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels with run-flat tires are also part of the package, as are BMW Individual roof rails with an aluminum finish.
In the handsome interior, new wood trims are available as part of the Convenience Package. Choices include Dark Burl Walnut, Dark Bamboo or Light Poplar. The Convenience Package also adds BMW Assist with Bluetooth®, ambient lighting, self-dimming mirrors and an enormous Panoramic moonroof that makes the interior an airy, bright place to be. New leather colors for 2011, Oyster and Cinnamon Brown, offer an expanded palette of hues to contrast with the new exterior colors. The Technology, Convenience and Cold Weather Packages up the luxury and technology with features like Navigation, Park Distance Control, Online Information Services, four-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats and steering wheel, and headlamp washers. The Active Ventilated Seat Package includes ventilated front seats, which provide warming or cooling air circulation through the seat back and seat bottom and an “active” driver seat, which uses subtle motion to keep your spine flexible and exercise various support muscles. Perforated, Nevada leather-covered, twenty-way power-adjustable multi-contour seats for the driver and front passenger are also part of the package.
Navigation is additionally offered as a stand-alone option. Sun shades for the rear side windows keep the kids cool, while heated front seats wrap you in warmth when there's a bite to the air. If the finely tuned chassis and strong powertrains aren't enough to entertain you, an iPod and USB interface is available. Paired with a fourth-generation iDrive controller, the navigation system uses a clear 8.8-inch display with new graphics rendered in high resolution. Direct-select keys are also a new iDrive feature that enhance usability, as well. BMW Apps are on the horizon for X5 owners who are Apple® iPhone users. Online services will be available while in the vehicle, and a web radio function will open up a wider array of entertainment choices. This new level of integration enhances the already impressive BMW ConnectedDrive suite of abilities with free apps available from Apple’s store.
The X5 xDrive50i offers the full list of options and packages available in the X5 xDrive35i models, while adding more choices to go along with its extra engine-bay muscle. A Rear Climate Package includes privacy glass, four-zone climate control and window shades. The Premium Sound Package upgrades to a premium audio system and adds an iPod and USB adapter and SIRIUS Satellite Radio with a one-year subscription. There's also a Sport Activity Package available for X5 xDrive50i models, which adds either 19-inch Y-Spoke wheels with all-season run-flat tires or 20-inch Y-Spoke wheels fitted with high-performance run-flat tires. BMW Adaptive Drive is available and adds an active technology that incorporates Active Roll Stabilization and Electronic Damping Control to provide even sharper handling reflexes. An anthracite headliner and 10-way power adjustable sport seats are included, as well, with 20-way power multi-contour front seats available to up the luxury and support. Shadowline exterior trim sets off the X5 xDrive50i with Sport Activity Package.
