A newly updated Acura TL debuts for the 2012 model year with a fresh new appearance, performance upgrades and the technology features found in much more expensive luxury automobiles. Coupled with Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system, the all-new Sequential SportShift six-speed automatic transmission provides improved performance and even better fuel economy.
The 2012 Acura TL SH-AWD (MSRP $39,155*) is equipped with a 305-hp 3.7-liter V6 capable of 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway** in EPA fuel economy estimates, especially impressive for an all-wheel drive car. Super Handling All-Wheel Drive provides drivers not only with confidence-inspiring handling and traction in foul weather, but in dry conditions as well. SH-AWD continuously channels engine power to match weight distribution, available traction and other conditions, offering drivers seamless power transitions and amazing agility. The Acura TL SH-AWD provides high-performance cornering that is the benchmark in this class. For the performance-minded, Acura offers the 6MT model with a six-speed manual transmission, a feature that’s becoming more and more difficult to find, and handling and steering improvements.
Buyers opting for an automatic will benefit from a new Sequential SportShift six-speed automatic transmission. Engineering enhancements focus on improved efficiency, but the transmission also provides a double kick down feature that allows drivers to engage a double downshift – for example from fifth to third gear – that provides a much more sporty driving experience. The electronic Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system also incorporates a throttle “blip” during downshift to match engine revs, as you would when driving a car equipped with a manual transmission. The TL SH-AWD also provides an external transmission fluid cooler for long life and durability, which for 2012 is now available on all TL trim levels.
New 18x8-inch five-spoke alloy wheels are standard on the TL SH-AWD. The wheels are shod with low-profile P245/45R18 tires for precision handling. Buyers of the optional Advance Package on the TL SH-AWD receive 19x8-inch split five-spoke aluminum wheels with new performance 245/40R19 all-season tires that not only boost performance in dry weather, but in snow and ice as well. To improve handling on the TL SH-AWD, Acura employs special rate coilsprings with unique damper tuning to improve handling performance. Stopping power comes via special brake tuning and racing-inspired front brake cooling ducts for shorter stopping distances.
The Acura TL SH-AWD includes noticeable revisions to the exterior with a new look to the front bumper for improved aerodynamics. The grille is also revised, and the nose features updated headlamps, turn indicators and foglamps. The revisions in a shorter front overhang add to a sportier appearance. Evolutionary revisions to the rear include a repositioned license plate opening, new taillamps and more subtle trunk edge trim for a sophisticated appearance. Also new for 2012 are the body-colored door handles and rear window trim on all TL.
Technology improvements for 2012 include a reworked Bluetooth® Audio system that includes artist’s name, song title and additional information, as well as a new "active pairing" function for Bluetooth-enabled cellular telephones. The system also includes dial-by-number and dial-by-voice tags, and improved connection speed from the standard USB port.
The highly desirable Technology Package includes the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™, AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic with Traffic Rerouting™, AcuraLink Real-Time Weather™ and an Acura/ELS Surround® 440-watt Premium Audio System. For the 2012 model year, the navigation features a 60GB hard disk drive (HDD), and the full VGA monitor features richer colors from the backlit LED display. Fifteen GB of dedicated space provides room to store up to 3,500 songs, and a Song By Voice™ feature allows the driver to select music by artist, album, song title, genre, playlist or even composer.
For the 2012 model year, new body sealing techniques, including improved weather stripping design and additional expanding foam pillar separators, help reduce high frequency noise by three decibels in the TL cabin.
Acura's acclaimed Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes with a skeleton of connected structural elements that distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. ACE™ body design moves crash forces away from the passenger compartment and helps disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash. Along with this design, the TL features dual-stage, multiple threshold front airbags, dual-chamber front-seat side airbags with front passenger’s seat Occupant Position Detection System and side-curtain airbags for front and outboard rear-seat occupants. Passive safety features include three-point seatbelts, driver and front passenger’s seatbelt load-limiters and a range of additional safety equipment.
